NSF has funded over 80% of the world's BGC-Argo floats via GO-BGC, which ends in October 2026, so the global array will start shrinking. NSF is asking US researchers to weigh in on future ocean observing priorities: www.go-bgc.org/nsf/nsf-requ...

NSF is consolidating its geoscience research grants into a new program, GEOcore and reducing annual grants to $110 million total in 200-350 awards. Typical was about $300 million in 1,200 awards. Not including institutional grants ($1.3 billion/yr) and those may be gone. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

OK, so AI can apparently solve the puzzles of the Navier-Stokes equation. But can it solve the puzzles of the universe, in the way that Einstein did? My latest news feature for @nature.com looks into the question of how far AI can go towards scientific discovery. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

The Einstein test: what happens when AI tries to rediscover relativity?
Scientists are probing whether language models trained on historical data can reproduce creative breakthroughs.

This is roughly the change in global average from the peak of the last ice age to pre-industrial temps. Or about a half to a third of the change for high latitudes like Canada (had a mile or so of ice on it at that time). Let that sink in.

In my latest column for @chemistryworld.com I explore how "easy" it seems to be for the basic building blocks of biomolecules, even simple peptides, to be formed in space. www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/our-...

Our cosmic origins remain plausible, not proven
The evidence is there that the molecular ingredients for life can form in space, but that doesn't mean that they did

There was a 57% decrease in the number of research grants given by the US National Science Foundation last year to astronomy and astrophysics - and a 51% decrease in the funding. This is a collapse. aas.org/posts/news/2...
