The fifth edition of Dr. Elliott Joslin’s Manual for Diabetics (1934) includes a new final paragraph, where Joslin says: hey, remember that it doesn’t matter how you die - but it does lower my statistics for the life span of diabetics if you do.

Watching my glucose while reading the 1919 edition of Joslin’s Diabetic Manual, with instructions for the starvation therapy which kept some patients with type 1 diabetes alive prior to insulin. Joslin: fasting must be “rigidly enforced with children, because with them disobedience means death.”

Continuous glucose monitors are powerful tools but will not "rectify our Bad Energy crisis." To add, #type2diabetes is due to a combination of genetics and environment as well as lifestyle. And #type1diabetes is not preventable by lifestyle. #diabetes #science www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...

She left the medical mainstream and rose to be RFK Jr.’s surgeon general pick
Casey Means, the surgeon general nominee, has criticized the medical establishment. She could be put in position to change it.

I can’t help but take it as a bad sign when the drug company feels like it’s not enough to just send you the drug, so they also start including inspirational messages (which assume that you must be sad).

In the fight to stay between the glucose lines, both the algorithm and I are struggling this morning. #typeonediabetes
Image shows an insulin pump screen with glucose readings which are at first going low, down to <50. The insulin pump suspends insulin and I over corrected the low with juice, leading to a high glucose, which the pump automatically treated with a bolus of insulin… leading to another low glucose.

Enjoyed a wonderful couple of days at the University of Uppsala thinking about what it means to be a patient and how technologies shape the concept of patienthood!

My perspective “Into the Valley of the Sick” is out today! I’ve spent a lot of time immersed in philosophical questions about disease while I have enjoyed a reprieve from my own, but the work I do about medicine will always be shaped by my own experience with it, like I share here.

This slide from Ilana Löwy’s Garrison lecture resonates in the history of medicine, but also across all historical disciplines. #aahm2025
