The English/Welsh Greens won their highest number of votes, their highest percentage of votes, and their highest number of MPs at the 2024 general election. The opposite of the doldrums.

I doubt his leadership is under any threat, but when Caroline Lucas is ambivalent about him staying in post, it at least points to everything in the Green garden being less than rosy.

The Kemi bounce we hear so much about is an absolute game-changer. She's taken the Tories from 23% 2 years ago to 17% today. Can't wait for the raft of articles this week explaining how well she's doing.

Fine, just leave the years that City won the league by cheating blank, or if Rooney wants to decline a medal, that's up to him. His teammates who didn't win multiple championships like him might be more keen on being awarded the title.

Streaming and algorithms have changed the way people interact with music, so I wouldn't be surprised if a lot were familiar with the song, and they'll definitely be aware of it after Zack Polanski's recent 'Making Plans For Nigel' retweett snafu.

Has hapless Tim not seen what happens to anyone who criticises Farage's hero Trump? How naive to think he could point out how shabbily run Reform are and carry on as if nothing had happened. It also suits Farage quite well to use a peripheral figure like him as an example. "My way, or the highway."

The then EEC changed its rules over pooled access to member states' fish just before the UK accession talks. EU boats taking 'British' fish became a running sore for some parts of the country and played a part in Brexit. Now it's dissuaded Iceland from closer ties. Be careful what you wish for.

Evil? Is this the same JD Vance, the performative Christian, who was ok with his boss stopping aid to millions of people in desperate need? "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?"

Do people care (or even know) if someone is talking a GLP1? It certainly doesn't affect anyone in the way inhaling secondhand smoke/vape does, and children aren't likely to start injecting Ozempic for the glamour and buzz.

Judging by the popularity of vape shops and how successful it is in helping people quit the fags, we can expect smoking to become a thing of the past within a matter of weeks.

When Count Binface was on Newsnight, he lamented the show's move from a serious investigative current affairs programme to a souped-up podcast. Victoria Derbyshire is excellent, but the hollowed out format doesn't really add anything that can't be found elsewhere.

Part of me just wants to pull up a chair and settle down with a bowl of popcorn to enjoy the spectacle, but 3 parties continually trying to outbid each other in coming up with the more batshit right-wing policies isn't a good thing in the long run.

It's why supermarkets put the fruit and vegetables (foreign reporting) at the entrance and all the crap (Royal/celebrity gossip) later on. People start with good intentions but still end up filling their trolley with junk food.

It would definitely help. You can't do a whole lot of recovery in a day, but you can do some, and you're not inflicting any more damage on that day, so a rest day helps in 2 ways.

Yes, it's possible to 'jog' a marathon in, say, 5 1/2 hours without taking so much out of yourself that you couldn't do it on subsequent days. My perception is that it's mostly non-runners who are dismissing the marathon feat as impossible 600 miles (even in 12 days) is much harder, imo.

* experienced, not experiment

Sweet Bird of Truth @sweetbirdoftruth.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
I'd say the exact opposite. To a non runner running for 26 miles is an incredibly difficult thing to imagine yourself doing, and doing 30 in 5 weeks is impossible. For an experiment runner, not so much. And it is a great feat of endurance, but unless they were done at a fast pace, not elite.

Just completing a marathon isn't an outlandish accomplishment for a fit young man. Obviously completing 30 in 35 is on another level again, but by no means impossible.

I listened to the podcast. It was pretty scathing of both Farage and Yusuf. It's true that Farage can't run a large organisation, is a poor strategic thinker, and comes across terribly in any mildly difficult interview (especially with a female journalist) but Montgomerie saying it in public...

The media and public love an embellishment/outright fabrication/successful person being brought down a peg or two scandal. Who can forget the acres of coverage dedicated to every aspect of the life of the author of The Salt Path?

If someone always seems to favour one side over the other, then polemicist or partisan might be a more accurate descriptor than contrarian, but the internet has given us an even better term for someone who writes something purely to garner a reaction: a troll.

Do they normally announce good news on a Monday and bad news on a Friday to manipulate the oil price and the stock market or vice versa? This definitely-not-a-war war has been going on for so long that I'm beginning to lose track.

To be fair, in the UK we'd 'had enough of experts' before Trump was even elected the first time. Maybe Lewis will start to speak up for the 'legitimate concerns' of Brexiteers on his podcast.

He's been offering his inner circle early access to impending announcements so that they can clean up in the stock/commodity/prediction markets, so this is the logical next step to squeeze even more money out of his presidency.

Yes, we learned early on who the more vulnerable groups were, but teachers and pupils alike went home to their families. The higher the R number, the higher the proportion of vulnerable people who came into contact with covid.

Lowe thinking that appearing on Joe Rogan is the same as wooing British voters. When Reform platformed an anti-vaxxer who claimed the covid vaccine caused the King's cancer, it went down like a bucket of sick, and they were soon distancing themselves from him.
