Archaeologist Gertrude Caton Thompson led the first all-female archaeological expedition in history in 1929. She was one of the first in the field to use aerial surveys to identify sites, using them successfully for her famed work in Zimbabwe & Egypt. She died #OTD in 1985. #WomenInSTEM (1/2)
Gertrude Caton Thompson (1888–1985), the pioneering English archaeologist and Fellow of the British Academy renowned for her groundbreaking work in Egyptian prehistory (including distinguishing Neolithic cultures in the Faiyum depression) and her 1928–1929 stratigraphic excavations at Great Zimbabwe—which conclusively proved the site's medieval African origins, debunking racist colonial myths attributing it to Phoenicians or other non-African builders—poses in a classic black-and-white studio portrait from her mid-career years. The composed woman gazes directly at the camera with a calm, intelligent expression, her dark hair neatly styled in soft waves typical of the 1920s–1930s. She wears a light-colored blouse or dress with intricate embroidered zigzag and floral patterns along the neckline and shoulders. The soft, neutral dark background and subtle lighting highlight her dignified features and the fine details of her attire, capturing the determined spirit of a trailblazing scholar who advanced rigorous, evidence-based archaeology in male-dominated fields and challenging political contexts.

‘Science needs defending’: record number of researchers run for office in US mid-terms
Many Democrats making the switch to politics are motivated by the Trump administration’s cuts to science — whereas energy and AI are a pull for some Republicans.

At age 14 in 1921, Philo Farnsworth observed the parallel furrows of a plowed potato field in Idaho and imagined breaking down images into lines of electrons, providing a blueprint for fully electronic television.

Physical chemist Ruth Benerito was born #OTD in 1916. She pioneered a key chemical process, cross-linking, which led to wrinkle-resistant cotton fabrics. It transformed the cotton industry & helped save it from competition w/synthetic fibers. #WomenInSTEM She held >50 patents. #inventor
Color photograph of scientist Ruth Benerito in a chemistry laboratory. She is an older woman with curly white hair, wearing large round gold-framed glasses, subtle makeup, small black earrings, a silver ring, and a light blue lab coat over a collared shirt. She sits or stands thoughtfully with her chin resting on her hand, gazing slightly off-camera with a serious, contemplative expression. Behind and beside her is complex scientific glassware apparatus, including a round-bottom flask labeled "BUCHI PLASTIC-GLAS," green-tinted tubing, a distillation setup with clamps, connectors, and other lab equipment mounted on stands. The background shows more blurred lab instrumentation, evoking a professional research environment at the USDA Southern Regional Research Center where she conducted her groundbreaking work on cotton chemistry.

Almost two billion items of plastic packaging are thrown away in the UK each week. Shampoo, body wash and liquid hand wash add to this plastic pile-up - so switching from bottles to bars is better for the environment. Eight plastic-free soap bars to try: littlegreenspace.org.uk/reviews/Natu...
