Today is the feast day of the beheading of John the Baptist. Here's a graphic medieval depiction of a decapitation to observe the occasion
This is Artemisia Gentileschi's painting Judith Slaying Holofernes, 1614–1620, not the more famous painting by Caravaggio. Decapitations were a popular medieval subject.

[US military aggression] Trump bombed Nigeria on Christmas Day

Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief,
the United States launched a powerful and
deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in
Northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and
viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at
levels not seen for many years, and even
Centuries! I have previously warned these
Terrorists that if they did not stop the
slaughtering of Christians, there would be hell to
pay, and tonight, there was. The Department of
War executed numerous perfect strikes, as only
the United States is capable of doing. Under my
leadership, our Country will not allow Radical
Islamic Terrorism to prosper. May God Bless our
Military, and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, including
the dead Terrorists, of which there will be many
more if their slaughter of Christians continues.
DONALD J. TRUMP
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF
AMERICA

Does anyone care about bread? I made this yesterday. It's eaten now, but I think I'll double the recipe and make some more tomorrow. Recipe in alt-text #Sourdough #bread #baking
A loaf of sourdough bread sitting on a wire rack.

Ingredients

392g High protein bread flour
58g	Whole wheat flour
270mL Water
7g (1 tsp) Salt
100	Levain (1:1:1)
40g Sunflower seeds (do not soak these)
20g Flax seeds (soak these in boiling water all day)
60mL Water (pre-soak)

Directions

Levain
9:00: mix up your starter with flour and water. Keep it at 25ºC for about 5 hours, until it becomes lively. I keep it in the oven and use the light to maintain the temperature.

Pre-soak
9:10: pour 60g of boiling water on top of the flax seeds. I use a glass dish with a plastic lid. Set it aside until it's time to mix the dough.

Autolyse
12:00 mix the 450g of flour with 270mL of water. I use a stand mixer. Let it stand for 2 hours at 25ºC.

Bulk fermentation
14:00 mix the dough with the levain, the sunflower seeds, the salt, and the pre-soaked flax seeds. I put it on the stand mixer for 10 minutes because I'm lazy and I've never done it any other way, so I can't say if it's the best approach.

14:30 / 15:00 / 15:30 / 16:00 — stretch and fold periodically. there is no science to this.

17:40 transfer dough to a cutting board, dust with rice flour

Overnight Proof
18:10 transfer to a boule, put into the fridge

Bake (next day)
Transfer to bake tin, score fancy art with a razor blade
Preheat oven to 450ºF— bake covered for 30 minutes
Reduce heat to 400ºF — uncover and bake for another 20 minutes

There is a kind of low-level criminality at large these days whose chief characteristic is tenacity. It’s said that the petty criminals in Tianjin after the Boxer Rebellion were very tough. For example, if you asked someone to take your luggage, he would demand two dollars; if you said it was a small case, he would say it was two dollars; and if you said it wasn’t far to go, he would say it was two dollars; and if you said you didn’t want it carried, he would say it was two dollars. Petty criminals can’t, of course, be considered good role models, but there is something admirable in their tenacity. It’s the same with demanding your economic rights. When someone tells you this is too old-fashioned, the response should be that you want your economic rights; when they say it’s too petty, the response should be that you want your economic rights; when they say the economic system is about to change and there’s no need to worry, the response should still be that you want your economic rights.

A lawyer named Strange was shopping
for a tombstone. After he had made his
selection, the stonecutter asked him
what inscription he would like on it.
"Here lies an honest man and a lawyer,"
responded the lawyer.

"Sorry, but I can't do that," replied
the stonecutter. "In this state, it's
against the law to bury two people in
the same grave. However, I could put
``here lies an honest lawyer'', if that
would be okay."

Besides Jarmusch, the founding members of the society are said to include the actors and musicians Tom Waits, John Lurie, and Richard Boes. Musician Nick Cave, whom Jarmusch knew when living in Berlin, was inducted as a member after having been mistaken for a brother of the director. Director John Boorman is an honorary member, having been presented with one of the society's elaborate Waits-designed business cards. Others rumored to be members include Thurston Moore, lggy Pop, Josh Brolin and Neil Young though none has been formally recognized by the society, which refuses to disclose its inner workings to the public. The society meets occasionally, ostensibly to watch Lee Marvin films together.

Wow I just figured out how to create multiple tables in a spreadsheet using Apple Numbers and my mind is kind of blown
There are three tables in this spreadsheet. The first one has the Canadian Federal tax brackets for 2026, the second one has the BC provincial rates, and the third has the tax calculation using the SUMPRODUCT function, which can operate on a range of named cells that you can create by resizing and renaming the tables referenced. Game changer for me. This definitely beats both Excel and Google Sheets.

Loaf du jour #Sourdough
Sourdough loaf cooling on a wire rack. I almost messed this one up because my kitchen scale started displaying wacky numbers. I replaced the battery and it was still acting weird. The recipe I used is a modification of The Perfect Loaf seeded sourdough, but their 1/2 loaf is too small. I scaled it and then added a more water and white flour. The consistency seemed very hydrated but according to my calculations it should be 70%. I guess what I’m saying is this loaf could be a one-off; it is about the perfect size and consistency I’ve been trying to achieve.

It’s odd how the rapacious American military industrial complex is now seen as being a social good that suffers from insufficient patronage. fed.brid.gy/r/https://bsky.app/prof…
Thom Tillis, a Republican senator from North Carolina who’s been critical of both Trump’s tariffs and Canada’s decades of freeloading, called us out on exactly this in Halifax. He offered some faint praise for our new defence spending (“That’s lovely,” he told the audience), but he also pointed out that it’s come awfully late. “Can we do a make-up payment for the 20 years of shortfalls?” Tillis said. He ruffled a few feathers in the room, but he’s got a point.

This is a bad idea, Alan, and you should feel bad.
We may hope that machines will
eventually compete with men in all
purely intellectual fields. But which
are the best ones to start with? Many
people think that a very abstract
activity, like the playing of chess,
would be best. It can also be
maintained that it is best to provide
the machine with the best sense organs
that money can buy, and then teach it
to understand and speak English.

doing this one tonight, with ground lamb and beef. just grated a huge pile of potatoes. we had it a few weeks ago and it was amazing
Cassie Best's rösti-topped
lamb & rosemary pie

750g lamb mince or chunks
2 tbsp plain flour
2 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped
1 carrot, chopped
3 garlic cloves, crushed
2 large rosemary sprigs, needles
picked and finely chopped,
1 tbsp tomato purée
200ml red wine
500ml lamb or beef stock
1 tbsp redcurrant jelly
850g large floury potatoes (such
as King Edward or Maris Piper),
cut into large chunks
50g mature cheddar, grated
50g unsalted butter, melted

1 Season the lamb and toss in the flour. Heat half the oil and brown the lamb, then remove to the plate. Set aside.

2 Reduce the heat to medium, and cook the onion and carrot for 10 mins. Add garlic, rosemary and tomato purée, and stir for 1-2 mins.

3 Return the lamb to the pan and add the wine, stock and jelly. Simmer, reduce heat to low, cover and cook for 2 hrs-2 hrs 30 mins. or until the
lamb is tender.

4 Boil the potatoes for 10 mins until softened
slightly but still holding their shape. Drain and cool, then grate coarsely. Mix with cheese and seasoning.

5 Heat the oven to 190C. Transfer the lamb stew to a baking dish, too with potato mixture, herbs and butter. Bake for 35-40 mins.

Listen and I'll tell you a tale I've been told
Of a union organizer who knocked a starship cold
They met where the stars are scattered thin out on the galactic rim
And Starfleet command is sorry that they ever ran into him

Fold up your guns
Run while you can
Look out, here comes the union man

Now the ship was patrolling rim stars when she got a call for aid
And up come a local convoy in a hurried grim parade
Saying, "Captain we've caught a monster who's too much for us by far
So take him please and throw him in the heart of the nearest star"

"Just why do you need a whole convoy?" the Captain wished to know
"Three ships to guard the other, lest he grab it as we go."
Now the Captain was intrigued and he said, "stand by for a scan,"
But all that showed on the viewing screen was a little old union man

The Captain said, "I can take him," and he beamed the man aboard
The convoy turned and raced away crying "Thank the Lord!"
Then the Captain looked him over asking, "just what's going on
That they sent out half their trading fleet just to make sure you were gone?"

The little old man just chuckled saying "Captain don't you know?
My job is organizing wherever I may go
And I can build me a union out of anything you got
And the folks who run that planet well they disliked that a lot"
"Amazing," said the Captain, "but you can't do that in here
My crew are loyal navy men and we've no cause to fear."
But he heard the old man saying as he walked out the door
"Captain, y'know, there have so been navy unions before"

Well the Captain soon forgot him, setting course for Starbase Five
For all he saw the union man he might never have been alive
Till a troubled ensign asked him "is it true sir what they say?
That we've got high hazard duty without high hazard pay?"

Well the Captain couldn't answer except to say "its true
Starfleet could pay you better but there's not much I can do."
But when he woke up next morning he found out what morale was like
For the bridge was filled with pickets and the whole crew was on strike

Then the union man walked up and said "I'm sorry to trouble you
But your ship is now a job shop of the I double-W.
We've sent our demands to Starfleet command and they said they'd grant us none
So we're just gonna keep on sailing until this strike is won."

"Now further we've decided, to run this co-op style
Giving everyone experience, at each other's job awhile
We like you too much to dump you at the first starbase we see
But we voted you to the galley and this week's command to me."

So somewhere down in the galley you'll find poor Captain Kirk
Scrubbing away on dishes swearing it'll never work
And Spock as he dries those dishes says, "It might succeed I fear
And please, Sir, while you're washing don't splash water in my ear."

Jackson’s ghost story, published in 1959, was a hit; it became a bestseller, the critics praised it, and the movie rights sold for a goodly sum. The incipient madness of Eleanor Vance seemed to affect her creator, though—or perhaps it was the other way around. We Have Always Lived in the Castle is narrated by a girl who is even more disturbed; at one point, she sets the house on fire to scare off her sister’s suitor. Jackson, a mercurial personality at best and aggravated by the prescription amphetamines she took like aspirin, experienced her own psychic disintegration not long after finishing that final novel, a breakdown triggered when one of her husband’s many affairs with Bennington students took an uncharacteristically serious turn. Eventually, Jackson pulled herself together with the help of a psychiatrist, but the burden of so many years worth of bad habits proved to be harder to conquer. She died in her sleep, of cardiac arrest, at age forty-eight.

The federal budget contains a statement that the oil and gas emissions cap will be scrapped. #CanPoli #canada #co2
Update on the Oil and Gas Emissions Cap: Canada is committed to bringing down the emissions associated with the production of oil and gas. Effective carbon markets, enhanced oil and gas methane regulations, and the deployment at scale
of technologies such as carbon capture and storage would create the
circumstances whereby the oil and gas emissions cap would no longer be
required as it would have marginal value in reducing emissions.

New AI tool

The federal government is turning to Artificial Intelligence to enhance productivity and improve services within the public service.

A made-in-Canada AI tool will be developed by Shared Services Canada, in partnership with the Department of National Defence and the Communications Security Establishment.

“By supporting innovative research to strengthen public services, this work will protect our digital sovereignty, keep government data and information safe in Canada, and create opportunities for the Canadian technology sector,” Budget 2025 said.

The government is also rolling out an Office of Digital Transformation to identify, implement and scale technology solutions across the government.

“It is not simply about we’re going to replace the humans with AI,” Michael Wernick, the University of Ottawa’s Jarislowsky Chair in Public Sector Management, said.

“In many cases, you can assist and augment the work of humans with video tools. So, I think that’s some of the more interesting use cases of AI.”

“That’s Why We Become Witches”: Sylvia Townsend Warner’s Lolly Willowes (1926) publicdomainreview.org/collection/l…
Sylvia Townsend Warner (1893–1978) wrote Lolly Willowes, her debut novel, shortly before meeting her life partner, the poet Valentine Ackland (née Mary Kathleen Macrory). At first she was self-conscious in the presence of Ackland — “young, poised and beautiful, and I was none of these things” — but Warner invited her to stay in a spare room at Miss Green, the worker’s cottage that Warner had purchased in East Chaldon in 1929. They would live together for thirty-eight years, and catch the attention of MI5 for their communist activities. When Virginia Woolf once asked Warner, at a party in Bloomsbury, how she knew so much about witches, the author of Lolly Willowes replied matter-of-factly: “Because I am one.”

If I can’t be this ocd about baking bread what am I even doing
A loaf of bread cooling on a rack. Light is terrible, frankly not an interesting photo. It’s too hot to cut so you can’t see the crumb yet, and I moved it from my normal photo location because someone has set a tray of cookies there (not shown)A worksheet depicting ingredient proportions for Sunflower and Flax Seeded Sourdough bread. It’s a half size version of The Perfect Loaf seeded sourdough recipe but there are no sesame seeds, no fennel seeds, twice the sunflower seeds, and I used 100g of 1:1:1 starter instead of the levain that Maurizio recommends, so its about 89% hydrated instead of 85%. I also just used high protein bread flour instead of semolina because this one is plenty dense enough.

This variant has a nice moist crumb and it’s very yummy and glutinous.

Bread day! 15% whole wheat sourdough I baked the one on the left in a cast iron Dutch oven, but I should have preheated it. Next time! The one on the right was baked in an aluminum bread pan. Both covered at 450°F for the first 30 minutes, then reduced to 400° for another 20 minutes.
Two loaves of sourdough bread cooling on a wire rack. The one on the left is round; the one on the right was shaped by a bread pan. Both have a light dusting of rice flour to highlight the score marks. The one on the right has more pronounced ridges and a golden brown crust. The one on the left will make good sandwiches.

View from the window of my cousin's place when I was passing through southeastern BC. #FensterFreitag
A green yard visible through an open window or possibly a deck with an overgrown horse arena, some solar panels, lots of trees, and mountains on the horizon. The sky is clear with some high cloud overhead.
