Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 09/06/2026Today, NASA announced the crew of the next Artemis mission. Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 29/05/2026Starship is definitely in a different category because of the way SpaceX is developing it. It’s not an operational rocket. 040
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 29/05/2026I don’t think it’s really more common. We haven’t had too many incidents of rockets blowing up on the pad, and with the increase in rockets being launched more of them are going to have problems. 230

Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 30/04/2026That's one point of the current definition of planets, having enough mass to be a sphere. It's the last point, clearing the neighborhood of its orbit, where Pluto runs into trouble. 000
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 30/04/2026(I haven’t even addressed that the U.S. has no unilateral authority to declare what is and isn’t a planet.) 1621
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 30/04/2026Plus, given that Pluto is the only planet (and to be clear, it’s still a planet! It’s just a dwarf planet) discovered by an American, this whole thing feels very political at a time when NASA’s science budget is being slashed. 3550
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 30/04/2026But making Pluto a planet again because of nostalgia is a non-starter to me. I completely understand why people have feelings about it, and those feelings are valid!! But that’s not a reason to change the scientific status of a planetary body. 3642
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 30/04/2026If the scientific community expands the definition of a planet to include Pluto, that’s great. But that definition should then also include similar bodies like Eris and Ceres as planets. 1552
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 30/04/2026Here’s the thing about Pluto. I don’t care if it’s a planet. I do care if there’s a clear scientific definition of a planet, whether that encompasses Pluto or not. 920626

Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 21/04/2026And if you’re like wtf is char loss HEY I wrote about it at National Geographic before re-entry: www.nationalgeographic.com/science/arti...nationalgeographic.comArtemis II's last test: Will its heat shield work?Excess charring on Artemis I's heat shield had NASA racing to understand what went wrong—and to ensure the technology was still safe for the current crew's high-speed reentry. 2595
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 21/04/2026VERY good!! It means that all the testing and adjustments to trajectory NASA made likely worked 1140
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 21/04/2026This was Artemis I’s heat shield. The capsule enters at an angle which creates these marks 1241
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 21/04/2026Yeah I mean there was a fair reason for concern but NASA also did a ton of work in ensuring it would be safe 070

Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 21/04/2026This rather creepy photo is Artemis II’s heat shield underwater, as taken by the U.S. Navy. This is the first photo we have of the heat shield, and upon initial examination it doesn’t seem to have the char loss that Artemis I’s had. 15791134

Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 20/04/2026They'd love to if they're ready but they aren't going to be ready. It's unclear if lander hardware will even be ready by the time they want to launch that mission. 150
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 20/04/2026Apparently not, and it's going to come back to haunt them 020
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 20/04/2026This wasn't a revolutionary report. Most of this we already knew, it just lays things out more clearly. The one thing I did find super interesting was this -- basically NASA didn't set a uniform spacesuit standard for Artemis contracts and that's a problem. Report: oig.nasa.gov/wp-content/u... 4312
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 20/04/2026Basically it says that if the new spacesuits (built by Axiom) adhere to the same schedule as previous spacesuits, they won't be ready until 2031. That being said, Axiom is taking steps to reduce delays -- but even so it's not looking likely they'll be ready for a 2028 landing 1300
Swapna Krishna @swapnakrishna.com · 20/04/2026NASA's Office of the Inspector General issued a report today on the status of the spacesuits that will both replace the aging suits on the ISS and be the suits used on the lunar landing. We've known it's delayed, and this report doesn't refute that. 1362
