(1/2) Today, Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week comes to a close for 2025 – but the urgent need for awareness and research in this space continues. Treatment options for anorexia nervosa are limited – and only effective in about 50% of people.

Researchers at The University of Melbourne and Orygen are seeking people to take part in 2x 2-hour online focus groups which discuss the factors that play a role in the development, maintenance, and recovery from eating disorders. We are seeking:
•	People aged 12 or older with a lived experience of a past/current eating disorder
•	People aged 18 or older who are the family members/loved ones/carers of someone with a past/current eating disorder

BIRD speaker Dr Erica Neill explains that although clinical trials are common in some mental health conditions such as schizophrenia (>2,000 trials in the past decade), very few clinical trials are conducted for anorexia nervosa (254 in the past decade).

For the BIRD conference, Prof. Genevieve Pepin discusses parents' experiences of taking their child with an eating disorder to the emergency department. Over an average of 2.67 years, families made 5.2 visits to emergency. The average wait time was 6.3 hours and many experiences were negative.
