Two and a half months ago I said "what if" Today on TDOV we launched the first volume of das transgeist; a new collaborative-community effort intended to highlight the stories, art, and experiences of transgender individuals in the form of a peer-created-and-curated self-published zine 🏳️‍⚧️

It’s your responsibility, as the more experienced partner, to recognize these differences and step away if your skill levels aren’t compatible. You should have the experience to know that if you dance with this person, someone is likely to get injured due to the difference in skill level.

And at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how many dances you know if you can’t read your partner. On the other hand, experience also matters. If you’re a professionally trained dancer, you need to be cognizant that not every partner may have the same experience or skill level as you.

It isn’t enough to memorize the steps, the routine, the moves in order. You have to actively watch your partner, their body language, how they move to the music, and respond accordingly. It’s a deeper, unspoken level of communication beneath the surface.

I’ve been labeled as unethical from trying to follow the “rules” for communicating. Words become meaningless at their face value. They’re used to define, defend, deny, and justify. To succeed at polyamory is to succeed as a dance partner.

Lessons learned from my experience with “unethical” polyamory: Being new to the poly community feels like being new to being queer. Everyone expects you to automatically know all the rules. They say the foundation of ethical polyamory is communication, but that’s a grossly simplified statement.
