Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 04/11/2025Getting super excited as #firewood is finally getting integrated into #avalanche #avax. That plus doing some serious vibecoding with #github-copilot #github to smooth out the remaining tasks! 010
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 04/11/2025#github-copilot is the shit. I love being able to steer AI while it's working. 020

Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 29/09/2025TIL "immutable variable" is a contradiction. "variable" means it can change, and "immutable" means it can't. 000

Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 23/09/2025In #rustlang it's `use tylenol`. No point importing, just use it. 020
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 22/09/2025Until you realize that if you extract raw pointers or iterators from a std::vector and then modify the vector in a way that causes reallocation, those pointers or iterators can become dangling, which is UB. Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 22/09/2025I made it through the wilderness Somehow I made it through Didn't know how lost I was Until I found #rustlang I was beat, incomplete I've been had, I was sad and blue But #rust made me feel Yeah, #rust made me feel Shiny and new 010
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 09/08/2025I recommend enhancing go's panic on nil pointer message: panic: runtime error: nil pointer dereferences can be avoided in #rustlang, but not #golang, and this code dereferenced one at runtime and the code didn't bother to check, and the reviewer didn't catch it either. Use a better language. 010

Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 18/07/2025The next person who tells me rust is too verbose will get this post. TIL that in #javascript, parseInt(0.0000005) results in 5. Here's the equivalent in rust. Definitely too verbose. play.rust-lang.org?version=stab... 000
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 16/07/2025#rustlang discourages basic math -- addition, subtraction, etc! Why is that? Because off-by-one errors and overflow errors are a major source of bugs. Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 09/06/2025Hire or don't hire? Gave the classic "two-sums" problem, where you try to find offsets of elements that sum up to some target value. Here's their rust implementation, rolled out quite quickly. 000
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 06/06/2025Please. Same time tomorrow is not `now += hours(24)`. There are *NOT* 24 hours in every day. Some days have 23 and some have 25, assuming you live in a region where this horrible thing called Daylight Savings Time exists, which is in ~40% of all countries, affecting ~15% of the world population. 000
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 30/05/2025Glad it's Friday. Please, no more #golang next week. `go vet`, codeql, `go race`, `golangci-lint`, oh my! So many things to check. What am I missing? To be fair, in #rustlang you have to do `cargo fmt -- check` and `cargo clippy` 020
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 30/05/2025s/getting used to/tolerating/ I have done plenty of #golang when I was at Uber. Now that I've tasted the #rustlang sauce it's so painful to go back. In golang, changing the visibility of a function means that EVERY caller now has to be changed. I won't be getting used to that. 050
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 30/05/2025Yep. Foo() is global but foo() is not, so changing the case of the first letter changes its visibility. 110
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 30/05/2025Writing some #golang code today. Feels so painful. Renaming a function to change it's visibility feels so wrong. 340
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 30/05/2025Back from Avalanche Summit in London! So happy to present my project. Ran into a few #rustlang enthusiasts as well. Of course, the perf numbers tell the story for me. 000

Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 19/05/2025I know, I wasn't making it a debate. I just don't see why it's easier to translate from 'loop' to 'for', than it is going from 'for' to 'loop'. I don't get why it's about the number of keywords. A pattern is a pattern, which needs to be learned by the LLM, unless I am missing something. 100
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 19/05/2025Super insightful response. The memory model rust wants you to use is actually also friendly to the garbage collector as well 020
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 19/05/2025I am not sure if I understand. For example, "for" in #golang translates to either "loop" or "while" or "for" or an iterator in #rustlang. I think fewer keywords doesn't mean easier anything. You have to learn each variety of "for" instead of four different words. 110

Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 18/05/2025Cursor's ability to rewrite from #rustlang to #golang seems better than the other way around. I wonder if it's because there are fewer examples of good rust code than go for the LLM. 270
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 18/05/2025Presumably you've never worked with Java, with some error messages (novels) that push vim to its limits. 110

Reposted by Ron Kuris ✅Huly @huly.bsky.social · 14/05/2025One of the things that is medium level annoying in Rust is that sometimes it fails to communicate to you how easy your problems are if you just used that other method that also exists. I didn't programm in this language for a few months, forgot everything about file ops and there were far too many 151
Ron Kuris ✅ @svjaneo.com · 14/05/2025Learning #rustlang combinators was a slow process. Coworker reminded me of learning the subtle differences between things like `unwrap_or` and `unwrap_or_else`. While these are well documented, there's some cognitive load and learnings in languages other than #golang. 000
