Adams 12's board voted 4-1 to close six schools next year. The district has lost 7,400 students in eight years, Supt. Chris Gdowski said, and he expects more closures, but not for at least three years. www.westminsterwindow.com/news/arti…

Colorado expects a $1.6 billion budget gap next year. Readers can now vote on Amendment 87, Prop 136 and Prop NN in a simulation, then balance the budget with what's left. Built by COLab, CU Denver and Weigh In. Curious whether other newsrooms are trying tools like this.

A note for anyone covering school closures: Adams 12 says Centennial Elementary is too small to keep full-time specials, under its 300-student line. The records I requested say the neighborhood isn't.

Jeffco has five tax questions on the November ballot. Two property, three state. I built a calculator that adds them together, because a household budget doesn't separate them.

Question for anyone covering schools: does your district grade itself on attendance by a stricter bar than the state uses? 27J's board counts students missing 30% of the year and calls it "the federal definition." The feds and Colorado say 10%.

The numbers under the Moore story: county values the land at $5.6M (tax valuation, not appraisal). Jeffco's last Westminster sale: appraised $3.43M if rezoned, agreed at up to $1.8M. Anyone covering school-district land sales elsewhere seeing similar gaps? Happy to compare notes.

Jeffco valued concurrent enrollment at $7.7M in tuition families didn't pay in 2023-24. It's an estimate: the district counts completed courses and multiplies by three. What it doesn't say is which schools' families got the savings. Part 4 of The Opportunity Tax, Monday.

Something I keep running into covering Colorado school funding: the big projections pitched to parents at community events are almost always supporter-generated, and almost always run past where any official forecast stops.

A detail from Part 1 I keep coming back to. An Arvada High student told her school board in February that her school had six concurrent enrollment credits. The next student said Chatfield had 166. A third said Dakota Ridge had 64. The presentation moved on.

Jeffco ran through nearly 2,000 hot dogs by early afternoon at Saturday's Back to School Bash. 3,000+ people, dozens of tents, a two-story inflatable dartboard. Three of those tents were about ballot measures to raise money for schools. I spent the afternoon at the money tables. 🧵

Jeffco told its school board it saved families $8.5 million in college tuition last year. It has never said which schools got it. So I spent 10 months and $1,551 in records fees building the school-by-school number myself.

CDE has to rule on the Northglenn homeschool enrichment program today. Two things nobody has answered: whether approval resolves the 2025-26 religious instruction questions, and what happens to 42 programs if ERBOCES loses its second member Aug. 15.

47 homeschool enrichment applications filed statewide. 42 came through one BOCES. CDE returned all 42 asking who's in the building. That's not a one-program story anymore. That's an oversight design question.
