Haruki Murakami was always good with secondary characters - often they were more interesting and fully-realised than the protagonists! An example is Oshima the librarian in Kafka on the Shore.

When you use AI, consider this: the massive energy demands of AI data centers are driving up electricity costs. As well known, the use of water for cooling is also huge. The costs are socialized, the revenues go to the companies. www.pbs.org/newshour/sho...

It doesn't mention a fifth option, which appears in the history - military intervention. In the US they defend the constitution, not a particular office holder.

Slightly implies that secularisation is the opposite of becoming more 'religious' (in the sense of attending a church), while I understand it as freedom from and for 'religion'. That the Catholic Church is increasing attendance is proof of secularisation (it's allowed to exist).

At an airport chatting to an older man about our delayed plane. I gave him updates from my phone. He said he had a long layover next, so wasn't worried. We were wearing masks because it was Covid. Later I saw his name - Manilow - and found he'd been performing in the city the night before.

A large beardless man in a leather cloak appeared at her cell door and pressed his shoulder against the bars to force the key to turn. ‘Come on out,’ he said. Liza remained on the pallet, unable to move, struggling to swallow. The man sighed. 'Come... on... out.' #WriteCBC

Well, this from the Guardian indicates that Labour voters either did not turn out or switched to voting for Green or LibDem. Labour should leave Reform for the Tories to worry about and ditch austerity.

Can we ever have a fair society when the wealthy are too powerful and tear down whoever might challenge them? When the BBC over-reports on a minor right-wing party leader? When people on the Left blame the Left, saying we're out of touch/don't have a narrative? Corbyn was, did. Look what happened.

The highest hill on the island is 241 metres (a 'marilyn') on St Boniface Down. When you search 'marilyn height' you get 37-23-36, which isn't about height at all! At least the results didn't insert extra letters to your search term.

Most hills on the Isle of Wight are TuMPs, under 99 metres. However, if you Google 'TuMP height' you get 1.9 metres. That would be a very small hill. But, Google, there is no 'r' in TuMP!

I was going to count the Warsaw album as the debut - I didn't know it was a 'bootleg' circulated by RCA. I should dig it out and have a look at it more closely, but it's not a great album, like the two released by Joy Division (not counting Still).

Ah, it's often the case that students will be getting ideas from US-based media sources. In any case, I've now steered him to look at the relationship between secularisation, freedom of conscience and the decline of religious commitment in the UK and Germany.

Where does this formula come from? A student has asked about researching politics replacing religion. I've never heard that type of phrasing. It seemed to be a Habermas type of study rather than politics as religion.

I was up walking near Hebden, North Yorkshire, when I investigated these odd grey symbols on the OS map. The area appeared to be full of earthworks (maybe old quarrying?) now covered in heather. Just above Garnshaw House.
