Today is an end-of-season bonus opportunity to turn off lights, close window blinds, unplug chargers, and make small changes that add up to energy bill savings (and greenhouse gas emission reductions). Stay hydrated- but maybe don't break out the pumpkin spice just yet.

This month is a great time to plant! Don't forget to include some fall-bloomers to support pollinators. Bees getting ready to hibernate, migrating monarchs & hummingbirds still need food. See all-season plant lists at: www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/BeeCity

The health of the Chesapeake Bay starts many miles away. And some of the Bay's greatest upstream allies are trees! Get a $25 coupon to plant a tree! Drop a comment if you would like us to send you info on this and other treerific local programs. #SaveTheBay #PlantTrees

Carpenter Bees are very cool, very important native pollinators. They are curious but not aggressive (males can't sting). They don't eat wood. Their nesting holes can be filled in with putty or caulk. They don't like painted or varnished wood. Let's try to live in harmony with these buzzybodies!

A too-full septic tank can lead to groundwater pollution, nutrient overload, and pathogens in our waterways. That can be prevented by regular maintenance- and we'll even give you a $75 rebate for having your 💩 pumped out! www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/SepticRebate

Some reasons not to over-apply deicers: - Makes money disappear faster, but not ice. - Can kill grass & landscape plants and burn pet's feet. - Causes concrete to deteriorate. - Pollutes soils & waterways and pretty much stays in the environment forever. www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/SaltSmart

Our local pride means we want to protect the Bay (not spread Old Bay) so we use less salt in our winter operations. The liquid brine sprayed before a storm contains only 23% salt but still prevents ice from sticking to roadways & makes plowing more efficient. www.frederickcountymd.gov/SaltSmart

Help protect local wildlife by swapping your porch light! Amber, yellow, or red bulbs are less disruptive to bats, pollinators, and migrating birds than bright white or blue light. Adding a motion sensor or downward light deflector helps reduce light pollution as well.

Help pollinators: let fallen leaves, dried up stems & old plants stay in your yard for the winter. They're valuable habitats for overwintering insects like luna moths, honeybees, & butterflies. If you want leaves off a lawn, rake them under shrubs and into flower or vegetable beds.
