Our project Dark Side of the Boom goes on to win @coveringclimatenow.org award for large collaborations. A proud moment for all partners who worked tirelessly to make this happen @earthjournalism.bsky.social @lukewbarratt.bsky.social @justinhendrix.bsky.social @ramshajahangir.bsky.social
Screenshot of the winning citation ..it says The data centers propping up the digital revolution — artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cryptocurrency, cyber scamming — depend on massive quantities of energy and water, often at the expense of climate-vulnerable communities that have little of either to spare. In this sprawling collaboration of 14 newsrooms in 11 countries, led by Internews’s Earth Journalism Network, journalists set out all across Asia to explore what exactly these data centers mean for daily life and the environment. In total, the 18 stories of this project add up to a map of the physical toll behind our fast-evolving world that is “brilliant” and “highly original,” judges said. The angles are fresh, the mix of shoe-leather reporting and expert insights make the stories authoritative, and the project’s layout is inviting, and even exciting, encouraging readers to continue learning more.

We need to ask more questions and critically examine the renewed push to these energy sources. It has to be a balance of countries taking urgent immediate actions as well as the removal of long term dependence on fossil fuels.

However, one impact that we arent talking about enough is how a country that produces less than 1% emissions is bearing the brunt of the choices that the Western world and developed countries make on a day to day basis. We need to talk more about an urgent end to fossil fuel based activities

Countries may raise borders but mountains know none. . Whatever a country does in the region impacts other countries deeply. Large development project, hydropower projects, removal of vast swathes of forests for various activities these all have become contributing factors to this disaster.

The first response to a natural disaster must be rescue efforts. However, as people working in the climate and environment space, one can’t help but feel extremely disappointed. We have been warning about the development activities going on in the Himalayan region.
