FYI, you CAN re-pitch a project you tried w/ last week if you want to switch up your pitch style. But if I don't request your materials after this event, you can count that as a pass. Thank you everyone for submitting this unusual (for me) way since I'm having a baby in Dec.

My pitch to me event for Sat July 25 is now CLOSED. I will go thru the replies now and request materials. Reminder: I am being 100x more selective because I’m having a baby in Dec. Thank you to all who participated! The next and FINAL pitch to me event will be Sat Aug 1 at 12pm EST.

I typically open for queries in the summer but this year I will be closed bc I'm having a baby in Dec! HOWEVER, I will be hosting 2 "pitch to me" events on Sat July 25 and Sat August 1 starting at 12pm EST until midnight EST on Threads (NOT here). Read more about what I'll be looking for here:

Closed to Queries for 2026

I'm not on here often but I do want to shout out this Kickstarter I backed. I met Maritza at a City Señora event and got to see samples of the shoes and they look great! Check out her KS here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/cay...

My plan is to reopen again next summer starting June 1 2026. Yes I know it’s awhile but keep in mind I also work as my agency’s subrights director and I need to balance taking care of my existing clients too. Thank you again to everyone who queried me!

010

Susan Velazquez Colmant @susanvcolmant.bsky.social · 01/09/2025

My policy is to respond to all of my queries so if you’re still waiting to hear back from me chances are you’re still in my “maybe” pile and I’m working my way to get to you. You can send a message to check in on me if you’re worried that your query got lost and I’ll confirm the status.

Susan Velazquez Colmant @susanvcolmant.bsky.social · 01/09/2025

I forgot to turn off QueryManager at the end of the day yesterday so if you’ve submitted on Sept 1, no worries—I’ll still read and review those queries.

100

Susan Velazquez Colmant @susanvcolmant.bsky.social · 01/09/2025

Hello it’s Sept 1 which means sadly, I am closed for queries for the time being. I will post again when I reopen or participate in any pitches but tbh, there’s a lot of amazing stuff that came in this summer that I still need to work through getting responses to everyone first.

All of this is to say, that I know QueryManager gives a lot of stats and data to querying authors now and while it's useful information, don't spend too much time trying to decipher the data. Each agent tackles their query inbox differently.

Nooo my plan to is consistently reopen in the summers! I did that last year and hopefully the tradition will continue

Lmao closed for the “summer” why did I write “somewhere”

Yes I’m still looking for fantasy! I’m just listing out what I’d like to see more of in this final month

020

Susan Velazquez Colmant @susanvcolmant.bsky.social · 01/08/2025

Ooh this sounds really interesting! Is this still a WIP or do you have a plan to self-pub/query it?

Susan Velazquez Colmant @susanvcolmant.bsky.social · 01/08/2025

More nonfiction projects! Still on the lookout for narrative nonfiction, pop science, pop culture, and self-help w/ special emphasis on writers from diverse backgrounds. Examples include: FASHIONOPOLIS by Dana Thomas, STOLEN FOCUS by Johann Hari, the forthcoming WHERE DID EVERYBODY GO by Don Martin

Susan Velazquez Colmant @susanvcolmant.bsky.social · 01/08/2025

More historical fic please! I'll take it all but would love more of the Roaring 20s, WWII, and the Swinging 60s in South/Central America & Europe settings. Open to #HR although I will warn that the genre is tough atm. But one day it could circle back so don't want to miss out on any new voices here

More book club/contemporary fiction please! I'm in a book club myself and I'd love to represent the kinds of titles that you're excited to chat about with a group. Examples include: THE LIST by Yomi Adegoke, REMARKABLE BRIGHT CREATURES by Shelly Van Pelt, YELLOWFACE by R.F. Kuang

Now that it's August 1st, friendly reminder that I will be closing to queries at the end of the month and I will remain CLOSED until next somewhere. So last call! Here's a quick #MSWL about some things I'd love to see more of this month #amquerying #amagenting

But for everything that is in the "maybe" pile (as in I'm still deciding whether I want to request a full), I'm moving at a snail's pace. Sorry about that! The main battle is just carving out the time to focus and read. And I'm losing that battle lmao

Susan Velazquez Colmant @susanvcolmant.bsky.social · 13/06/2025

Since I'm also the subrights director at my agency, I am more selective with adding new clients on my list. I'm at least able to respond quickly to queries where the premise just doesn't interest me

100

Susan Velazquez Colmant @susanvcolmant.bsky.social · 13/06/2025

Anyway, if you're wondering why agents are taking so long to respond here's what one agent's box looks like. As you can see, I still have a lot to go through and this is on top of my current client reading, 2024 queries i invited to resubmit, current client subs, emails, etc

100

Susan Velazquez Colmant @susanvcolmant.bsky.social · 13/06/2025

My colleagues also reported that they've seen an uptick in their query box compared to last year. Not sure if there's any particular reason for that--just more people writing and querying this year vs last?

110

Susan Velazquez Colmant @susanvcolmant.bsky.social · 13/06/2025

I've been open to queries since June 1 and just for some transparency here's what my QM looks like. I have received a total of 453 queries so far. In 2 weeks I have already exceeded the total # of queries rec'd for the MONTH of August last year. 😳 #amagenting

I do blame the media for not explaining what was perfectly obvious to all of us paying attention: that you could not have mass deportations the way Trump spoke of them consistent with order and due process.

I’m casting a wide net for #NF - narrative nonfic in pop culture, pop science, history, politics, science/tech, self-help, and some select memoir. Hope to see you in the query box and otherwise I will be lurking online and looking for authors to approach!

Susan Velazquez Colmant @susanvcolmant.bsky.social · 02/06/2025

Wow I’ve only been open a day and already have 100+ queries! Thanks to all who have submitted and I want to especially call for more #nonfiction projects since I haven’t seen anything in that category yet! #amquerying #NF

As I write on my blog,I know that it’s very difficult to find an agent who matches your project 100%. My rule of thumb is that if you’re project matches +60% of my MSWL, it’s worth a shot to submit to me even if there’s something in the “anti” list. I’m always happy to be surprised in my reading!

Their lifelong passion for books, how their current skills/experience can transfer to the role, and showed off their research about the company and why they’d be a good fit. I’d also recommend volunteering at any local writer’s conference so you can network with agents and pick their brain more

I’m afraid I don’t have advice for that since I don’t know anyone who moved into agenting w/o being in publishing first. HOWEVER, I’ve spoken to multiple editors who came in with 0 pub experience and when a position came up, they basically wrote a killer cover letter that explained (cont)
