Sound familiar? At times of uncertainty and conflict, “we look for a ‘strong’ leader. Then, in position, they can create more chaos, more instability, which actually makes us more likely to vote, again, for someone with these traits. We can end up going round and round.”

The Post followed cultural burning practices, an Indigenous tradition now permitted under California law and used to help protect forests from wildfires.

Years ago, at a workshop we held on changing wildfire risk in western Washington, I was struck by the analogy that preparing communities for megafires in our fuel-rich forests is similar to tsunami: rapid evacuation, because they can't be fought. Nice coverage by @rdzombak.bsky.social. Gift link.

I grow so weary of this type of coverage. Fuels always matter, and when homes are part of that wildland fuel complex, home hardening matters. It is frustrating to read good scientists quoted as basically saying there is nothing we can do about climate change and wildfires. It's simply not true.

Moving is sometimes an option, but particularly within urban/suburban landscapes that are already developed, staying and changing how vulnerable homes and surrounding landscapes are through fuel reduction and home hardening is not only possible but makes one part of the solution.
