Workers are not waiting for peak temps to act on #extremeheat! Last Friday, we brought together labour and health groups to talk about the urgent changes they want to see to BC Heat Exposure Regulations. So great to work with @workersolidaritybc.bsky.social, Anelyse Weiler & @bcpolicy.bsky.social

Our new piece in @ca.theconversation.com! Our research found that even organic farmers motivated by social justice are having trouble making concrete job quality improvements for hired workers. Good jobs are crucial for a resilient food system, but we need policy supports to make it a reality.

🥕 What are the drivers of diversification and job quality on organic farms? Addressing a massive gap in sustainable food systems research, @susannaelsie.bsky.social et al. developed a survey to assess multiple dimensions of job quality for hired farmworkers alongside diversification. 🔗 rdcu.be/eJeZC

Our op-ed is out today in @thetyee.ca ! Protecting workers from the risks of extreme heat isn’t a threat to affordable food. It’s key to ensuring food security with hotter summers to come. BC should update its regulations in line with US states taking the lead, like WA, OR & CO.

Climate change definitely endangers human health. Looking for a synthesis of impacts on farmworkers, or analysis of extreme heat protections for farmworkers while on the job? Our paper is out in Current Environmental Health Reports (DM me for a version that isn’t behind a paywall) rdcu.be/ewACw

Many associate organic with sustainability, including social aspects. But as we show in our new paper, organic standards in MX, US & CA only mention social aspects in principle, and they are barely mentioned at all. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... #agroecology #sociology #food
Heat map of principle scores showing low scores for social fairness, social development and human health across all three countries.
