On July 15, 1903, my grandfather Ayatoshi Kurose arrived in Seattle from Yokohama aboard the Shinano Maru. He brought this abacus with him — one of the few items from his journey I still hold today. #SusansFamilyHistory #JapaneseAmericanHistory

April is the month of Go For Broke Day. This year, I pay tribute to Yosh Nakamura, who passed away at 100. He was a close family friend, and I remember learning origami & kitemaking from him at SELANOCO JACL. I cherished our talks and I’m thankful that his & Grace's voices are preserved in my book.

March 3 marks Hinamatsuri — Girls Day in Japan. One of my most treasured possessions is this "hina-ningyo" that was given to me at birth by my grandmother's cousin, a lady-in-waiting in the Imperial Household. Celebrating all the great women in my life today and every day.
