Above that thicket growth the hillside steepens, the trees are old. The farm reaches one of its limits there, and finds its example. No leaf falls there that is lost; all that falls rises, opens, sings; what was, is. --Wendell Berry. Reverdure.

Thank you! It's great to have this compilation for the next round of computer updates when AI gets turned back on.

It looks ok now on my laptop. Well-- definitely not ok (the fires and smoke are horrible)-- but the map has data.

I visited a couple years ago and was inspired by the history of the Center, when well-trained, creative and dedicated people came together for the greater good. Thank you for all you do! Not a selfie, but a picture of the cool model of the site.

Funny that I have to come to bluesky to find kindred spirits resisting the tech takeover over education.... Thanks for the resource and camaraderie

Wonderful! The rhythm of pencils tapping on paper is the accompaniment to learning.

Thank you for correctly the lede online. Meat has a huge climate impact (and other impacts, too). There are healthy, lower impact options that are vegan, vegetarian or based on alternative protein.

Shouldn't the lede say "meat-rich" instead of "meat-free"? That would match the information in the article: "research that finds wet, raw and meat-rich products are associated with substantially higher emissions than dry kibble"

Interesting to see the view from space-- thanks for sharing. My view was limited because I was under all that dust, wind and storminess.

I know a lot of researchers work on attribution. I don't do this kind of work, but I know of this project: www.worldweatherattribution.org

The bad air quality results from the dust storms and fires further west, where there was terrible damage. Heartbroken for everyone affected by the wind and fire. www.wzzm13.com/article/weat...

Weather in the Midwest has had wild swings this weekend. Now it's snowing a little. I just reported it on the mPING app which helps NOAA scientists with forecasts and research. mping.nssl.noaa.gov

This morning, I'm thankful for the government partnerships that make air quality maps like this possible. Data to support my observation of the hazy, unhealthy air. fire.airnow.gov#3.57/37.67/-...

Less than 0.01% of the historic prairie remains in the "prairie state" of Illinois. Now, funding for major restoration work has been frozen at the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. Funding came from an "America the Beautiful" grant... what does the gutting of such a program say about the future?

With Federal Funds Frozen, a 1,300-Acre Restoration Project Comes to an Abrupt Stop at Midewin — Chicago Region’s Largest Natural Area
A 1,300-acre restoration project at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie has ground to a halt after federal grant funds, awarded in 2023, were frozen by the Trump Administration.

Thanks for sharing this thoughtful essay. This line stands out to me-- poignant and true: "Intensive energy consumption makes it possible to enjoy wealth while remaining isolated from its origins or consequences—to wear whale pants without thinking too hard about harpoons."

Interesting analysis. Thanks for taking the time to do it. Though I'm sorry you receive so much abuse.
