NOAA had spent years planning an air pollution instrument on the GeoXO satellite which would provide near-real-time, location-specific data on smoke levels, giving people the information they need to avoid exposure.

This seems like a good time to call attention to the fact that the government cancelled plans to develop a new satellite sensor that monitors wildfire smoke over the U.S.
