Boo. I was enjoying this until it all sort of fell apart for me in the last 10%. Too much saccharine schmaltz, fireflies, attempts at ‘magical realism’ and page after page about a sheep named Elaine. #booksky

I moved to Hurstville in Sydney recently, and I didn’t realise Sumner Locke Elliott, author and homosexualist, was a local from just next door in Kogarah. Here he is remembered in tile.

Post yourself from a different era [Me (far left) at Kaos Comedy Restaurant, 90s. I had the biggest crush on the guy I'm sitting next to. It was very much unrequited.]

I'm packing box after box of books, and getting reacquainted with some old friends. Cudos to 16 year old me who had the good taste to buy 3 Dragon's Dream titles way back then; Syd Mead: Sentinel, Roger Dean: Views and 21st Century Foss. I know nothing of Dragon's Dream but they loved a trippy font.

It's a good day when the new release book 5 of a favourite series jumps to the top of the TBR pile. "Carnival of Lies" by D.V. Bishop, the 5th installment of the Renaissance detective Cesare Aldo series. This time he's left Florence, for Venice in the year 1539. Intrigues ensue! #booksky

I finally got around to seeing the 2021 film Firebird, as it was just added to the free streaming service (SBS OnDemand) here in Oz. Oh my, such a beautiful, sad, poignant film, especially knowing it's a true story. It was released last year in Japan and I love the Japanese poster (pic 2). #firebird

Share some sisters from Film or TV. "Oh, I wish Daddy could be here right now! You can never lose your talent, he used to tell me. You can lose everything else, but, you can't lose your talent."

I've just started reading The Will of the Many by James Islington (Heirachy book 1), and oof the world building is great. A fantasy blend of classical Rome, with a bit of Dark Academia, and an almost steampunk lack of tech. That actually doesn't do it justice. Book 2 isn't out until November. [sad]
A large blocky shaped ship is levitating above a city that looks a little like ancient Rome.

If you see this post, find a pic of you from five years ago and post it. (The early days of the Covid lockdown, wearing a crazy night cap I knitted for fun. Before my cancers were diagnosed, and with noticeably less grey in my beard.)

New read: Cloistered by Catherine Coldstream, a memoir of her 12 years as a cloistered nun. I've only just started it, but I'm really enjoying it so far. Judging by the prologue her experience was... mixed, at best.
The front cover of the memoir Cloistered depicts a nun and the silhouette of a rose

...disappear from these brutal forms of justice. The Disappeared must leave everything behind and change everything about themselves to remain hidden. Enter Retrieval Artists, who find Disappeared in order not to expose them, but to let them know of pardons, inheritances etc. Excellent.

Another favourite book series, the Retrieval Artist series by Rosemary Edghill. In a future where contact with alien races is common, submitting to alien forms of justice and retribution is also common, even for what seems to be the most minor of infractions. An industry arises to help victims...

Another book series I've really enjoyed, the Pinx Video Mystery series by Marshall Thornton. 7 books so far, set in 1992, with a queer protagonist the video store owner Noah. Along with a small group of friends, Noah solves mysteries while hijinks ensue. Six 4 star reads (and one 3) for me. #booksky

Another series I really love is the Nightingale & Courtney books by Katie Daysh. 1800s British naval colonial swashbuckling, with a male/male relationship at its core. More historical fiction than MM Romance, and without many of the standard tropes. Book 3 in the series is out in March '25. #BookSky

I love a series, and I've really enjoyed this set of Cesare Aldo historical detective novels. Set in 16th c Florence, with a queer protagonist, they are something very interesting. There's a few anachronisms, like Aldo's ease with his sexuality, but I can cope with them. #BookSky
