Beam Rifle - Willpower

As part of a psy-op, the Malta Group arranged for a 'Knives of Barbie' playset to be the must-have Holiday gift of 2004. The results were not what they expected.

Wendy grew up in Chicago, her extended family "a happy pack of all-American Mutts." They supported each-other, even when she came out.

She joined the Marines, to serve her country, meet awesome dykes, and cover college. Wendy was second-best at everything she did, which made aggro-boys pissed: they either hated her for being too good, or claimed since a (different) man was better at any one skill it meant men (generally) were better. Supposed "Good Guys" pretended not to notice.

In a combat zone, her platoon had to pull out due to bad luck and stupid orders. The lieutenant tried to save his career by blaming her.

Mysteriously, uncovered evidence vindicated her, but it left bad blood. She cashed out, and was already in the Knives of Barbie while earning her degree.

On Crey Corporate Earth, it was the Crey Troubleshooter Blue Shield that slew the Clockwork King. Unlike Primal Earth, he did not survive.

Even Crey Corporation, with its meticulous dossiers, with its chemical, biological, and broad-spectrum energy analysis of any metahuman activity, underestimated the Clockwork King. While they understood he was a strong tele- and psychokineticist, they presumed it was the limits of his power. They neither appreciated he was one of the world's strongest psychics, nor that he had forged friendships with a number of psychics around the world. And in the moment of his death, his power reached out. Fading by the moment, some reacted.

Jenni 867
Traps - Dual Pisols

As part of a psy-op, the Malta Group arranged for a 'Knives of Barbie' playset to be the must-have Holiday gift of 2004. The results were not what they expected.

Jenni grew up in a survivalist compound, where the men were aggressive and controlling, and the women were mostly TradWives. A few standout women were twice as tough and mean as the men.

Jenni knew which role models she preferred.

When a group of the men tried breaking the few standouts into meek, subservient women, it got bloody quickly. There weren't really victors, just survivors.

Jenni left her biological family behind, to go with the splinter group. They formed a new women's only compound away from the men. Over the years, it became a Knives of Barbie affiliated sanctuary/supply depot. Jenni's take-no-crap temperament and survivalist training made her a natural fit.

It occurred to me, half-asleep, that while the Joker has a certain archetypal narrative power, he's static. His changes aren't developmental. The Joker tells you about Batman. Harley Quinn is more interesting because as a character she can grow. Harley Quinn tells you about herself.
A scene from Batman: the Animated Series (1992) with the Joker in a purple zoot suit and green shirt staring intently at Harley Quinn in her original red and black jester outfit. They're in some large, dingy industrial space, probably an abandoned warehouse of the sort that litters superhero comics.

Dusk Widow Venusta Arachnos Widow: Fortunata Training - Fortunata Teamwork #CityOfHeroes
A woman in a tight green spandex looking outfit with gold colored shoulder pads and other accessories. She is wearing a diadem or sorts. She is holding a datapad and standing next to a soldier in chrome and white (an "Arbiter"), on some large metal grated surface.

The text within the image reads as follows:

Dusk Widow Venusta
Fortunata Training - Fortunata Teamwork

The problem with wanting to be an Arachnos Arbiter is, for a job that requires absolute loyalty to Arachnos over "petty factional politics," you have to survive all of those politics to prove you are Arbiter material.

At first Venusta used prison tactics to survive: keep your head down and don't take favors. Establish working relationships, but don't confuse them as friends.

Then she began to play a game with the Arbiters. She sucks up to them, stays in eyesight, and is willing to let them see she's standoffish to the factions.

She's playing a different brand of politics. They know what she's doing. She knows they know it.

She's never outright defiant to the power players in Arachnos. Venusta spends far too much time sidestepping their little traps and games. It's slowed her official career advancement. But there is no faction, no patron as important to her as being an Arachnos Arbiter.

Eclipse Zenith Warshade: Umbral Blast - Umbral Aura #CityOfHeroes
Image of a purple man in black and blue spandex, and lighter blue boots and gloves that fold at the ends. He has a purple and black filled circle log on his chest. He is standing on wooden docks, with crates stored under a ramp in the background.

The text within the image reads as follows:

Eclipse Zenith
Umbral Blast - Umbral Assault

There are maybe a dozen honest souls on Striga Isle, and Samuel Wren wasn't one of them. Everyone must be a little corrupt--that's just the way the world works. His few virtues were working hard when the pay was right, and not mouthing off when drinking. He worked for smugglers on the docks, shifting cargo quickly and doing odd jobs.

Sam doesn't know how the Council left the crate behind, and still can't say for sure why he opened it, but something sped out and sunk into him. It was the fragment of a dark energy being, a Nictus, barely conscious, with no previous history of hosts. It should not have been viable.

He briefly considering supervillainry until he found a support group. Older Warshades gave him sobering warnings.

Now Sam's trying to set an example for his symbiote... pet? ward? partner? That's forcing him to be a better person and he's not thrilled about it.

Rusted Rook Brute: Psionic Melee - Electric Armor #CityOfHeroes
Image of a coppery metallic robot standing amidst mechanical contraptions known as the Clockwork, on a decrepit bridge in a ruined city (Boomtown). The text reads:

Primal Earth calls his home dimension "Crey Corporate Earth." It's where Corps have even more power, and Crey pulls even more strings. The majority of super hero or villain activity falls under one of the corps.

Blue Shield brutally slew the Clockwork King of that reality, but unlike on Primal Earth, that was the end of him. Crey collected the body and, years later, used it for their "Project Parthenogenesis" program.

They were not impressed with the results. Subject 390-43789-2 was the closest to success, but he was a pale copy of the original. Some environmental factor was missing. The personality training didn't take well.

The subject was incinerated.

Trauma, and the desperation to survive, unlocked Rusty's powers. The Subject leapt to a new clockwork body and destroyed the lab.

He fled, taking the biological samples from the original with him. He now calls himself Rusted Rook, and obsessively seeks out artifacts associated with the original Clockwork King.

Barrister Gloaming Mastermind: Necromancy - Dark Miasma #CityOfHeroes

Necromancy - Dark Miasma

'Barrister Gloaming' has the vaguest recollections of having once been a man. He still has a soul, or something similar. He knows he traded much for his power--voluntarily at that--but he can no longer remember all that he traded. Did he have family? Wealth? Earthly power? A worthy or loved name?

It doesn't matter.

What matters is what he has done with the power granted him in the between spaces, the boundaries--between day and night, between life and death. The psychopomp that granted him power sometimes tells him where he is needed. Oftentimes, he does what he thinks a good man would do: try to help where he can.

Illusion Control - Kinetics

During an alien invasion of Paragon City, an invader asked for Kathleen St. Simmons' help in surrendering to the humans. He gave his name as Mischief, and he had to get his Tactical Chaos Unit (TCU) out of the hands of his species.

With the alien's technology and Kathleen's own impish impulses, the pair led a merry chase through Steel Canyon. They turned ambush against ambush, avoided human defenders, fast-talked Trolls, devised traps with only seconds to spare, and yes, even fought when there was no other choice.

The two reached Positron, and presented tactical information to turn the tide. And then, the "alien" hologram disappeared. Mischief wasn't a member of the alien race, he was the TCU itself!

Together, St. Simmons and Mischief now fight evil under the name Mischief Moment. They avoid direct confrontation when they can, preferring to sow discord and confusion among the enemy, yet both are learning that sometimes they have to take the more direct approach.

It seems insane to her when someone suggests she may have been human once. No, the Alchemist worked with only the finest ingredients, and humans are so frail.

But if not human, who?

The Alchemist held sway over her for years even before the jar. When he had her drink the elixiers and lower herself into the jar, her only fear was he may find her unworthy in a year when he decanted her.

And a year became a decade.

And a decade became a century.

When the jar cracked, and she struggled forth like a hatchling from an egg, the Alchemist was dead. She could never know if he would be pleased with his work. But how could he not? Her blood crawled and danced inside and outside. Her nails were sharp. She preyed upon those as the Alchemist must surely demand.

Lloyd Morgan was severely burned by radiation in the crossfire of a super battle. At personal risk the hero maneuvered the battle away from civilians, but for Lloyd the damage had been done. He was rushed to the hospital.

Primal Earth calls her home dimension "Crey Corporate Earth." It's where Corps have even more power, and Crey pulls even more strings. The majority of super hero or villain activity falls under one of the corps.

The Clockwork King of that reality had a wife and daughter before the Crey-subsidized Blue Shield brutally slew him.

Her powers were neither as strong nor as versatile as her fathers, but after a Crey 'public relations management' incident killed her organic body, she was forced to inhabit one scavanged from a combination of Crey's tech and psionically-charged brass and copper from her father's clockwork.

She divides her time between Crey Corporate Earth and Primal Earth, using knowledge gained on each side to aid the fight in the other. She specializes in fighting Crey (to end their machinations) and Clockwork (to halt the Clockwork King's Primal Earth rampage, hopefully to a peaceful end).

Rock Tease Dominator: Earth Control - Sonic Assault
In a grassy park stands a blonde woman with curls. She wears a black domino mask. Her body appears to be covered with rock and crystals in greys, dark reds and pinks. She stands in what looks to be mud or perhaps quicksand.

Linda got frustrated easily. It was always someone else's fault. If there wasn't enough to eat during the Hamidon Wars, she'd blame the person distributing the meals or the family that got just a little more. If she didn't pass the test in class, it was the teacher's fault. If her parents scolded her for hitting another kid, it was their fault for not taking her side.

Then her powers developed. The government of Praetoria told her it was OK to get what she wanted, as long as she used her powers for them. There was so much praise--so much leeway. Disposable men, clothes, fine food and radical experiences were all at her fingertips.

If she killed a civilian, it was their fault for getting in the way. If a mission failed, it was the PPD's fault.

When one of her cadre called her Rock Tease, she took the name with twisted pride. To Rock Tease, power is a way to get what she wants, to play however she wants, and to never, ever be held accountable.

It's her childish dream come true.

Sister Bambi Natural: Archery - Tactical Arrow #CityOfHeroes
Standing in an otherworldly mountain lodge, on top of the firewood pile and next to the big lodge fire, stands a woman with a bow. The bow is drawn back and aimed upward. There are multiple arrows on the string and bow.

The text from the image reads as follows:

As part of a psy-op, the Malta Group arranged for a 'Knives of Barbie' playset to be the must-have Holiday gift of 2004. The results were not what they expected.

Home life wasn't very good for Bambi. Her father drank and proclaimed her a constant disappointment. She wasn't good enough. Anything she did well wasn't valued. She wasn't a son. And her mother just made excuses for her husband.

Girl's camp opened Bambi's world when she was 12 years old. First, she discovered a world where boys and men couldn't constantly belittle her. Second, she learned archery. Most importantly, for once in her life she received validation.

She never looked back. Amongst the right people, her skills were valued. She was valued. And she could value herself.

Raverfish Mutation: Poison - Water Blast #CityofHeroes
A vaguely female figure with spiny outgrowths on her extremities, purple perhaps covered with scales hide and bioluminescent markings dancing in a discotheque (Pocket D).

The text within the image is as follows:

Raverfish
Poison- Waterblast

Sofia Palminteri kept her well-to-do friends entertained as they moved from party-to-party across Europe. Beauty, wealth, charisma, achievement-she had just enough to neither embarrass nor outshine them. She was semi-professional entourage.

She should have been more careful, luckier... self-recriminations aside, Sofia took the pills and the drinks like she always did in Monte Carlo. Something changed her body and unhinged her mind. She was a monster that went wild in the club before regaining most of her control.

The property damage and a few broken bones killed the party.

Some good-time friends were frightened by Sofia. Even when she wasn't a monster, her skin was purple! More 'friends' decided she was a liability to their future good times.

A precious few remained quietly loyal or sympathetic. One suggested she go to the Americas for a while and 'broaden her horizens,' 'take time for the whispers to quiet' 'get sober...ish.'

Thus, to Paragon City.

Superlatron 1200 Mastermind: Robotics - Radiation Emission #CityOfHeroes
Image of a grey, green and black android with glowing green accents hovering above the standard, blocky robots used in the game.
The text in the image reads as follows:

Superlatron 1200
Robotics - Radiation Emission

Trevor, Hideo, Seamus, and Uniqua have inhereted the ever-kludged clandestine graduate student project known as Superlatron. Its parts are constantly being swapped out for other parts designed from scratch or salvaged from other projects and supervillain fights. The name Superlatron started as a joke, but maybe this version will prove its worth in combat.

Dorali 925 Dominator: Arsenal Control - Arsenal Assault #CityOfHeroes
Image of a woman in red and white, burring to pink, camouflage firing a futuristic rifle at an indoor firing range. She wears a helmet completely obscuring her face. She has a cumbersome Goldbrickers jetpack and is hovering a few inches above the ground.

The text in the image reads as follows:

Dorali 925
Arsenal Control - Arsenal Assault

As part of a psy-op, the Malta Group arranged for a 'Knives of Barbie' playset to be the must-have Holiday gift of 2004. The results were not what they expected.

Dorali's parents flew small prop driven airplanes all across America. Skywriting, barnstorming, cropdusting, courier; if it involved two wings and a prayer they'd do it.

When she was eight they were performing at a county fair, and they died in an accident. The insurance papers were misfiled, or forged, or maybe the wrong someone just pocketed some money. Dorali never saw a legal red cent, but she saw red. She ran away.

She went back the next year and took the Saturday gate money.

The Knives of Barbie would have taken her in regardless, but Dorali was too damn proud to walk in empty handed. She trained. She refused to be afraid of flying.

Dorali has a new name she uses for some civilian purposes, but her code name is more the real her. She's a grinder, and her downtime is spent, just like her missions, in the air.

Delilah Doom Mastermind: Demon Summoning - Pain Domination #CityOfHeroes
Image of an attractive devilish woman, dressed in skimpy gold armor and having wings, standing amongst her devilish minions on a concrete paved plaza.

The text in the image reads as follows:

Delilah Doom:
Demon Summoning - Pain Domination

"Do you know the primary differences between a demon and a devil, darling? Discipline. Prioritization. The long view.

"Even weak demons will exist for millenia, but they think in years at best. Give most of them a chance to wreak any old havok, right here, right now, and it will leap to that opportunity like a frat boys leaps to the kegger. Their 'master plans' fit on post-it notes. Oh, you'll find the odd exception or two; ones whose dark wisdom and even, dare I say, patience sets them apart. Perhaps one whose tastes go beyond mere carnage. They tend to rise to the top.

"Devils takes a longer view. We can forgo a snack today for a meal in a year, or a feast in a thousand years. And our tastes tend to the exotic-we don't settle for any old buffet. Take me, for example. Oh, you're a handsome man and I'm sure your soul is... succulent, but what if we share a bit of power today and plan for tomorrow?

"And tomorrow can be oh, oh so sweet."
