Fun facts: movies were originally 4:3. When TV was invented they made it 4:3 to match movies. So movies invented wider ratios so they'd be more impressive than TV. When they made HD widescreen they averaged TV & movie standards together and got 16:9. So neither older TV nor movies fit well on it.
