One thing I very much wanted to avoid in my new upf piece: any suggestion of credulity in the face of rfk jr
Now, far be it from us to suggest handing it to RFK Jr – his focus on reforming nutritional standards in the US is, after all, unlikely to be the result of serious scientific research, and stands notably at odds with his department’s recent relaxation of regulations around peptides, hormones, and food safety in general.

Still, the Trump administration’s purported push for better nutrition and higher-quality food in the US is one that’s been overall welcomed by establishment science.

“But the question is, what are they going to actually do?” says Mande. “And that's been more unclear.”

👏👏
Last week such "stop the boats" groups appeared in Dover and Portsmouth. The police, who are adept at exercising their discretion in arresting scores of peaceful protesters under terror laws, appear to have not known anything in advance and were thereby taken by surprise. The gangs sought to cause disruption and to block ports.

Not long ago, Just Stop Oil activists were given long sentences for simply discussing blocking infrastructure. In contrast, the balaclava-wearing gangs now do much the same with apparent impunity. One could almost call it two-tier justice.

Democrats should have the backbone to ask why that kindergartner shouldn't be allowed to kick at a ball with her friends when nothing is at stake. Or why the trans girl on puberty blockers, who never went through male puberty, is banned from participating. Or why the trans girl who's terrible at her sport isn't even allowed to be on the JV team. Or why the trans girl running cross country, whose times count for nothing and who will never get a scholarship, can't even run alongside her team for the sheer joy of feeling the wind in her hair and the road beneath her feet. Or why trans women can't compete in sports where there's no physical contact.

fuck you I deny it
We don't accept uncontrolled immigration to Europe, and we have spearheaded a strict immigration policy, both in our home countries and in Europe.
None can deny that illegal immigration has a negative impact on our societies: growing crime rates, increasing pressure on public services and erosion of public trust.

I mean is this really true?? He seems like a public health guy to me?
I mean, I think, you know, El-Sayed has run kind of a factional campaign. I mean, he presents himself as the leader of a movement. He’s been really focused on Israel and AIPAC, which is of less interest to a broader general electorate.

Will stancil: I don’t care about Sam Vimes! I’m saying that as a description of actual dilemmas faced by consumers, “boots theory” fails!

I’m sure it works great in literary context but in real life you usually can’t save money by buying more expensive stuff. It’s a common idea but not often true.

I had to stop after a couple of examples lest the whole article just be etymology
Outside of English, the story of “human” can be equally as enchanting. In Chinese, for example, the word 人 is hypothesized to be related to 仁 – which is believable, since they both sound exactly the same: rén. If that’s correct, it means that to be “human” (人) is to be “kind” or “good” (仁). Going even further back, we reach the Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s/k-niŋ, meaning brain, heart, and mind – rendering the ultimate meaning of “human” as “the possessor of a mind”.

I was so elated when I first learned this
The common name for our species, “human”, has a pretty simple etymology: it comes from Latin, via French. Six or seven centuries ago, the word was humayne or humain, the same as in French at that time; a millennium before that, when the Romans were roamin’, it was humanus. It has, given how long we’re talking here, not changed much.

But if we go even further back, things get interesting. The origin of humanus is something of a mystery, but it’s most likely connected to homo – Latin for, well, a human. And homo, quite pleasingly, originates in the Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰm̥mṓ, a form of *dʰéǵʰōm which implies participation. And that latter word? That’s the Proto-Indo-European word for earth – meaning an ultimate translation of “human” is pretty legitimately “Earthling".

There are indeed many taxes on poverty but "paying less for items" isn't one of them.

There's something almost... aristocratic about the boots theory, frankly. The idea that wealth brings with it the inherent frugality of quality worksmanship.

Americans once again fail to appreciate how old other places are: no, the electoral system wasn't built for a two-lane road; the two-lane road developed around the system (first political parties began centuries after the establishment of parliament)
In 2024, roughly 42% of all votes went to parties other than Labour or the Conservatives. In recent local elections, that number jumped to roughly two-thirds. Today, both major parties compete alongside Reform UK, the Liberal Democrats, Greens, and powerful regional parties in Scotland and Wales. Britain’s electoral system was built for a two-lane road—winner-take-all elections tend to sustain two-party competition—but its politics now resembles a six-lane highway.

a man brandishing a narwhal horn like a lance at a stabber? or, well, somebody at least; it's pretty foggy because somebody else went in with a fire extinguisher. we all use the tools at our disposal I suppose. what's that phrase? when all you have is a narwhal tusk, everything looks like a knife crime in process

Keir is a man who, by his own admission, has no self reflection and does not dream. An mdf sheet of a man
But then he can’t really say if he’s strictly an optimist or a pessimist and, no, doesn’t know if he’s an extrovert or an introvert, either. “I’ve never really thought about it. I don’t know what that tells you.” He doesn’t know what he dreamed last night – or ever: “I don’t dream.” Just hits the pillow at 11 and – “bang” – is out till around 5. He doesn’t have a favourite novel or poem, wasn’t scared of anything as a child. “Nothing. No phobias.” Hmmm, this is harder than I thought. What about his lovely heather-coloured tie, where is it from and who chose it? He takes it between finger and thumb. “Would you say heather? I had it down as slightly darker.” Quick-fire is perhaps not his format.I say, because on his face was a genuine expression of bemusement when I asked about his emotional inner life, that I’m guessing he never did therapy. “No, no,” he says. “No.” Then “No” again in a lower tone bordering on horror. He’s not saying this is the only way to live, it’s just that “I am self-aware enough not to go into side alleys to have a chat with myself about these things.”

tired: pronouncing testicles like Heracles wired: pronouncing cronion like onion
Cronus was usually depicted with a harpe, scythe, or sickle, which was the instrument he used to castrate and depose Uranus, his father. Cronus was likely originally a harvest god, which is why in many regions of Greece the month of the harvest was named Cronion after him.

sorry but I simply don't see how fewer successful suicides isn't a good thing
strigix @sovereignbeast.bsky.social

This is a statistic which is commonly cited in a way that misrepresents causality.

Reality check- Owning a gun does not make you want to kill yourself. In the circumstances where someone wants to kill themself, a gun is a highly effective method of doing so. So, successful suicides often use guns.

strigix @sovereignbeast.bsky.social

The rate of suicide attempts among gun owners and non gun owners is consistent. This means that, statistically speaking, there is no increased risk of attempting suicide due to gun ownership.

The increased risk is of succeeding in the attempt. This means the risk is conditional.

strigix @sovereignbeast.bsky.social

In other words, buying a gun to defend yourself does not meaningfully increase your risk of attempting suicide. Arguing against gun ownership for self defense by citing suicide statistics is a misrepresentation used to position being anti-gun as morally and ethically beyond reproach.

Very weird that the New York Times here mentions how birthright citizenship is found in "many countries in Central and South America" but neglects to mention the biggest and most obvious Northern examples... Canada and Mexico
In the coming weeks, the U.S. Supreme Court will issue its decision in a landmark case through which the White House has sought to end the 157-year-old legal standard of birthright citizenship.

When President Trump talks about this issue, he calls America “STUPID” for automatically granting citizenship to U.S.-born children of immigrants. The policy does stand out for its permissiveness: Although many countries in Central and South America have similar laws, most nations require that at least one parent be a citizen for a child to qualify.

this reads like most of the fraud in the country is in democrat run states. just inaccurate writing
It is not that Mr. Trump is abandoning Mr. Vance. He involves him in major decisions, has given him high-profile opportunities to position himself for 2028 and trusts the 41-year-old vice president to wage partisan warfare on his behalf. In a cabinet meeting this week, Mr. Trump compared Mr. Vance to Eliot Ness, the mob-busting federal agent, for working to ferret out fraud in mostly Democratic controlled states.

Trump has spent almost one in every four days of his second term golfing
When he conducts those polls in private, Mr. Trump often compares Mr. Vance’s performance to his own achievements. He has told several allies that Mr. Vance has never won a tough race without his help. (Mr. Trump’s endorsement got Mr. Vance over the finish line in a tight race for an Ohio Senate seat.) He has brought up the number of vacations Mr. Vance has taken as vice president. (Mr. Trump does not generally take them.)
