It’s the production design and so on too - absolute insistence on a really similar aesthetic, with a fascinating sideline in sprinkling in characters (main or sub) who are just *too* dark for general audiences. It’s like larks and capers and suddenly you’re looking at THIS mofo

Its expectation. People go to an R-rated horror like Obsession WANTING to be frightened /shocked / upset / repelled. That’s the needs of that adult audience Not many want the exact same flavour in the fun popcorn movie they’re taking their kids to - some people (me) don’t want that flavour at all

#scriptsky I personally think an overlooked factor in recent box office struggles is tone. There’s a consistent tonal through-line to recent films, aka heavy focus on stuff that is 1. Ugly 2. Dirty (as in 🫧🧼🦠) 3. Painful 4. Violent to women I think they went all in on 1-4 and audiences checked out
