The fact they can make messy first-guess approximations for very complex modern software might find a use somewhere in archival work going forward. And it's funny to see tech corps losing control of their code. But a lot of it really feels like clout chasing & tarnishing the "decomp" name atm.

I don't currently feel as intrinsically harsh on these slopcomps as others, I think the tools to create an approximation are interesting as their own thing (at least if it's actually understanding code, not a pseudo-emulator). But a decompilation in the traditional sense they absolutely are not.

I feel like with the recent surge in vibecoded "decompilations", the meaning of the word has diverged a lot, and I think we need a way to differentiate between "buggy executable that sort of works" and "byte-accurate, labelled code reproduction" Because they are not the same thing.

Criticising the political ideology of Israel isn't "aligning with nazis" any more than saying "Stalin was an evil guy" is. Contrary to the saying, the enemy of your enemy isn't always your friend, and we can have different reasons for believing something. The stopped-clock principle applies too.

Speedrun .com has a very simple job - be an accessible community-managed database of runs, and the community will pay you for upkeep. They've been profitable under this model for an eternity with zero issue. Trying to steal ownership of the community's data & restrict API use is moronic greed.

I think vibe-coding can be fine for small things where the technical debt doesn't add up, I know Palix used open models to vibe-code random scripts for the SM64 120 TAS, but those were single use, didn't require maintenance, and were operated by an expert. And that is a really narrow niche.

At that point you either buy a new console or a PC (or GabeCube ig), and I think a lot of people are gonna decide it isn't worth it. Boycotts fail, but long-term loss of trust in a product that needs it is absolutely lethal, especially when you need customers to buy into a half-decade-long product.

Boycotts basically only work when there's societal pressure from everyone watching (eg buying a copy of The Sun in Liverpool will get you some angry eyes). I think the main damage will be when they try to get buyers for the PS6. When people have to buy back in, people might refuse.
