You have to read an entire novel length HR AU to get here but I have not laughed so much at a fic in a while. From the perspective of a very sweet OC who is also dumb as rocks.

The first time Stephen sees Shane after the trade is on the ice, which isn't really a surprise. Ice is Shane's natural habitat. There are rumours in the MLH that Shane Hollander was born on the ice. Stephen never asked Shane about the validity of this rumour because it sounds awfully personal. If his poor mother had to give birth on such a hard, unforgiving, frozen surface, Stephen would probably not be keen on talking about it.

This fic posits that it was the former Boston captain (before Ilya) that started the practice and I am DELIGHTED!

The game itself was barely worth remembering. Ilya got through it, earning two more points in assists - one quick snap to Marly because he had the lane at the end of the first period, and a long drive to Carmy in the third because no one expected Boston's Russian Menace to give up the puck to a kid who maybe scored 6 goals a season, so none of Vshington's d-men were guarding Carmichael at all. His team won, even without Ilya scoring any goals of his own.
Captain Anderson gave everyone a fist bump and a good job, I love you as they filed off the ice, which mattered.

The HR fic I am reading now is actually doing the thing where the author is referencing real life hockey players but changing their names just enough to be recognizable, but still keep them as like au versions of themselves. I want to cry it’s so beautiful.

"Yes, Olga told me you were big-shot MLH star. I looked you up. Very impressive. Nearly as good as Ovcharkin."
Shane chuckled. "I don't miss blocking his slap shots,
Ill tell you that much."
"He is still playing?"
"I think they'll have to wheel him off the ice in a chair."

Plan for the evening in hand, Shane downloaded a few books on the history of the Russian Orthodox Church during the Soviet era and post-collapse. These would keep him busy until Cheryl could get him the finalized transcripts. He'd have to put his pleasure read — a Mateo Lemaire biography (and what Shane wouldn't have given to write that one) - on hold, but that's the job. Shane'd had to memorize the geography of the greater NYC metropolitan area for Scott's book. By comparison this was downright narrative.
