Japanese companies are generally bad at IT across the board. Security being just one area. Those who do it themselves don’t seem to have the qualified staff and those who outsource to the big Japanese SIs…well that is a whole other world of Byzantine tech development and management.

every single thing about all our lives would improve about a thousand percent if RFK was replaced overnight by one Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, complete with his futuristic medical technology can you IMAGINE him reviewing the reports of what his predecessor did

When I was growing up (north of Chicago) it was just pizza. The opinions and debates were which place had the best/favorite pizza and what toppings to put on. My grandmother, born in 1920, stood by “all pizza is good pizza” and she loved cold pizza the next day

Next go ask folks from Milwaukee and southern Wisconsin about this style of pizza, its origins and where to get the best.

In Can Tho for two days and then back to HCMC. The Sheraton here has a sauna. And they don’t limit it to 70°C. Cranked it up to 90. Haven’t felt this clean. And cool. For one week. Any time we get hot weather in Auckland I light up the sauna. Best way to cool down believe it or not. Now beer…

In this sense I don’t think Ted Chiang was incorrect when he called AI a “blurry jpeg” (maybe a funhouse mirror would be more correct), because ultimately the fears and projections people have about it tell us more about those people than they do about AI systems

Haven’t thought about Abbott and Costello movies in ages and ages. My grandmother (born in 1904) used to have me watch so many “old” movies and musicals when I was little. This was one I even remember

That tidbit I absolutely did not know. You are a fount of cool trivia. I actually never watched the original Japanese of マッハGoGoGo, but I have watched plenty ofガッチャマン yet didn’t go back to rewatch the English versions of that. Time to do some new and re-watching.

Someone needs to do an LV one that looks like those massive steamer trunks. The ones that were basically a full standup wardrobe or I think I saw one once what was essentially a portable full bar.

Wild boar. Reminds me of the scene in Tampopo talking about the wild boar eating the sweet potatoes… as the dude is dying if I remember correctly. Now I need to rewatch Tampopo because it’ll bother me that I can’t remember the exact details of the scene. Just had goat here in Vietnam. Tasty

Reminds of when I found a tiny local butcher shop in Nishi Ogikubo that has venison. On my way from the train station to my place. I probably become their #1 customer for a while.

Why would you spend so much money on Lurk faucets and brewing Czech beer and then not ensure it is poured properly?
110
Jeff Smith @sumisu3.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
BUT! These guys are not using the Lukr correctly. If I spoke Vietnamese I would get behind the bar and teach them. Their owner should already know and demand that they all do it correctly. Holding the fucking glass below the tap is bullshit!

This is not a bad světlý ležák at all. Quite a solid malt base and definitely a touch of acetaldehyde. Finishes a bit dry but lingers. Foam unfortunately does not linger but very nice and creamy at first. Does make me realize my own version does not suck at all. Good beer in Vietnam

Only if they would signal far enough in advance before they start pulling out. Have been nearly hit by buses far too many times when they simultaneously signal and move while I’m already along side. And when they turn corners but cross lanes. I’m all for giving way if drivers are sane.

Bia hơi definitely isn’t just about cheap beer. This is absolutely local Vietnamese culture. Watching people meet up with friends, guy out by the street grilling food while the staff run to tables with a bucket of ice and 2L flask of beer to pour for everyone. Loved every minute of it.

In Saigon/HCMC this week and next. So far out of the macro brews 333 is the best - some bitterness at least Bia hơi tonight. Should be like Taiwan 18 Days but younger and lower ABV. Found a place brewing Czech style beers (since 1995!) Didn’t expect a pour from a Lukr. Time for světlý and a tmavý

I would expect that the people who make this slop couldn’t get a high score either. And definitely not Seymour. If you showed these to his ilk zoomed in so they couldn’t tell they were in these foil containers and ask them what it was they wouldn’t even recognize it as food. Or they would be lying.

Governments and the rich love income taxes. They take their money before they give your yours. And then you get to figure out how to survive. I’m not a radical by any means, but I really want to see the end of labor being taxed. Imagine the benefit to the economy if we all had money to spend.
030
Jeff Smith @sumisu3.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
My point is that zero additional income tax should be achievable. There needs to be a move to less tax on labor for everyone. Sure, a CEO who gets a massive salary won’t pay more income tax but that is not where the tax escape has been happening. Or let everyone deduct their living ”expenses“

Jeff Smith @sumisu3.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
It really seems that if wealth tax is properly captured then nobody should need to pay more tax on salaried income. I don’t know the math but the tax take from those uber wealthy who make money “because they own things” should be massive.
