Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I'm also on 7 day and the fun thing is that my shot day is the first day of my weekend, so I can't really tell if the weekly mental breakdown is levels related or if it's my terrible soul destroying job! Hahaha! Hah! 020
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I had a flight from London Heathrow to Glasgow and it was BA1488 and I was like oh nooooo you cannot be having that as a flight 000

Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026My initial impression was that it is the most intimidating mountain I've ever seen with my own two eyes. It is just incredible you gotta see it 010
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026This was by far one of my favorite hikes I've done in the last few years, and I would love to revisit it, or maybe backpack the entire 30 mile Loowit loop, next year and get to spend more time with such an incredible landscape 190
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Finally after about 9 miles and just under 4 hours (3:20 moving time, the rest was photos and admiring the view) I made it back to the parking lot to see the last remnants of sunlight above Spirit Lake and the blast zone 140
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Mount Adams, the Belt of Venus (pink sky), and the shadow of the Earth (dark below the pink) 120
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026On the hike back up the service road you'll be treated to extraordinary views of the valley around the mountain and Mount Adams 120
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Additionally as you make your way around the middle of the blast zone, looking up you'll see a reminder that Loowit is still an active volcano, just biding her time. Steam and volcanic gas drill emits from the crater and lava dome 120
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026On the hike back I crossed the lahars I had already crossed, here's some more photos of those 120
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I turned around at that point as sunset was looming, but I'd love to revisit in the spring with more daylight when this hike apparently explodes with wildflowers. Here's a special one for me, an Indian Paintbrush. My middle name is Castilleja, which is the genus of these flowers 140
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Here is a glimpse of Loowit Falls, which descends 200 feet and is the outflow of Crescent Glacier, which is one of the few actively growing glaciers in the world 140
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Along the way I came across a small herd of mountain goats, which were an absolute delight 130
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026One of the more challenging aspects of the trail is it takes you in and out of gullies and lahars in the volcanic debris field, with some short and steep descents and ascents in loose strata. Wayfinding is fairly easy, but there was one particular lahar that took some effort to find the best route 120
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026From here it is about 1.5 miles to the falls, and the trail undulates over the hills of the blast zone from the 1980 eruption. Along the way there are great views of Spirit Lake and the tens of thousands of logs that were deposited there by the eruption 140
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026After descending the road down cross a dry river bed and jump on the Windy Trail and continue until you reach the connection with the 30 mile Loowit Trail (named for the indigenous name of the mountain), which circumambulates the mountain 150
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026The trail starts with 2 miles along a service road, first climbing then descending. As you hike the road you are greeted with ominous views of the mountain lurking in the background 140
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I hiked the Loowit Falls trail from Windy Point Viewpoint. Total distance for me was just under 9 miles round trip with about 1200 feet of elevation game. I didn't make it all the way to the falls because I got a late start and hit my turnaround time, but I saw the falls from a distance 130
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Okay phone photos from my hike yesterday: Tldr: Mt St Helens is a surreal and stunning landscape. It feels entirely inhospitable to human life, I am enthralled and cannot wait to go back 2200
Sula @sula-nef.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Hiked out to Loowit Falls at Loowit (Mt St Helens) today. Just shy of 9 miles round trip of some of the most stunning landscape I've ever been lucky enough to visit. I'll share more later but I'm so tired and I gotta drive home 0170
