Yeah it’s wild. There was def a period of time at my old research job when I was agitating for us to prototype a tool with flexible building blocks for social apps. And honestly, ATproto seems like it’s pretty much that. Really cool stuff.

Feel like sifting and filtering comes to mind, so maybe something like “gold panning”? Also hi this is Mike formerly of iDPI/Reimagining the Internet!

sug @sugzone.bsky.social · 31/07/2026

It's a fun personal tool for Bluesky, but the really cool thing is that other people can follow your feed, and you can follow other people's. It's really easy to image a version of BlueSky where lots of cool people made feeds like this, and you can follow a bunch to find crazy music all the time!

010

sug @sugzone.bsky.social · 31/07/2026

Then you just hit "publish feed", click the link it generates, and then pin the feed when it opens in Bluesky. Voila!

100

sug @sugzone.bsky.social · 31/07/2026

One your in SkyFeed, you'll click "feed builder". Again, I give instructions in the post for settings to configure, but the big ones are that you'll use the Input block to select your "music feed" list, and user the ReGex block to filter links using "youtu|souncloud|bandcamp|mirlo"

sug @sugzone.bsky.social · 31/07/2026

There's a few ways to generate a feed based on that list. I used SkyFeed because it's free and it works. You'll need to create an app password for it, which I explain in the post. Also made this little GIF to show you that process. skyfeed.app

sug @sugzone.bsky.social · 31/07/2026

And in case you don't feel like reading the post, I'll explain it here. First, make a List and call it something like "music feed list". That's where you curate your list of users who you want to pop up in your feed. bsky.app/lists

Last week I figured out how you can duct tape some stuff together on Bluesky to make it work like a platform just for music. It's really easy and you don't need to code or anything. I put together some instructions so my friends can do it too. Reply with your shiny new music feed!

For sure. It has been hobbling along though. Hard to imagine it closing up shop but it’s nearing 20 years old and that’s pretty ancient for something that’s changed very little the entire time.

Ah gotcha. Yeah I mean firing engineers smells like a VC/private equity style move right before you sell the company for parts. At least it suggests that BC’s existing staff is not part of its value, which is baseline grim.

I don’t agree but I get it. Cruel thing about life is we often don’t understand or even remember the stuff that makes people value us. But it can also be kinda freeing to embrace that you don’t understand and don’t have to, because life just happens and we’re all just bearing witness.

The idea is maybe we can find a way to make Spotify look as bad to listeners as it is to us, while asking them to go look for our music in places where we actually could get paid for it. How?? We enshittify from the bottom up.

021

sug @sugzone.bsky.social · 16/01/2026

Sabotage! I think there are 3 ways. 1) Treat Spotify as a place for free samples. Only a track or two from each album is there, listeners can find the rest. 2) Only put music up for periods of time. That’s how they do it with movies and TV on streaming! 3) Just publish snippets of songs

In April 2024, Spotify implemented a new scheme: songs with less than 1k streams per year would no longer receive royalties. The data for 2025 was just released via Luminate, and 88% of songs have been demonetized. Read it again: 88% of songs on Spotify have been demonetized.

Community radio should be the Internet's center of gravity. Social media sucks because it's literal work and work sucks. You're not living until you're winding through Appalachian mountain roads, listening to a station low on the dial. All this and more in my newest blog post yet.

Spotify was archived by Anna's Archive 2 days ago. When the company starts filing lawsuits, remember this bit from the book "Spotify Teardown": Spotify *exists* because of bittorrent, and because it began ... *with an archive of pirated music*.
