great to see the TransCODE Consortium's new @Nature paper on microproteins and "peptideins" — a major step for the field. we've been chasing this since 2014, when our @NatureComms paper first showed noncanonical proteins are biologically regulated, not noise. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Expanding the human proteome with microproteins and peptideins - Nature
A large-scale proteomics analysis of the dark proteome by the TransCODE Consortium reveals many translated non-canonical open reading frames to encode microproteins and peptideins.

GenomeIndia maps 130 million variants — a landmark. but it covers only 2% of the genome. most disease-associated variants lie in the other 98% — the dark genome. unlocking it would make it a genuinely predictive tool for precision medicine.

he asked the right questions and built the institutions to pursue them. that's the legacy.

he also didn't work alone. Hamilton Smith and Clyde Hutchison co-built the synthetic biology program. Claire Fraser's team at TIGR laid the foundation in the 1990s. the maverick framing erases all of that.

that result connects to my book Eclipsed Horizons. the dark genome — 98% of human DNA — encodes 250K+ novel proteins. my Homo minimus thought experiment hits the same paradox: compress the genome and the unknowns are what you cannot afford to lose.

JCVI-syn3.0 (2016) stripped a bacterial genome to 473 genes. 149 of them had no known function. a third of the minimum for life — unknown. that detail rarely makes the obituaries.

his most consequential work wasn't the genome race. it was the question that followed: what is the minimum a cell needs to be alive?

1/ 98% of our DNA was dismissed as "junk" for 50 years. Our research shows it's actually an adaptive reservoir — pre-encoded solutions that activate under environmental stress, preparing us for future challenges.
