The wealthier and middle class white men who had the privilege to just pack up and leave when shit got tough, left the neighborhood to gain the reputation it has now. Abandoning the black and brown transgender people and sex workers who built this community to fend for themselves.

If you look at places like San Francisco, you can see that divide even stronger. The Tenderloin district is an excellent example. A neighborhood labelled the Transgender Cultural District, that was abandoned by the white gay men that brought money into the district.

The queer community has been divided in America for a long time. The Daughters of Bilitis (first nationally published lesbian article) cared a lot about identifying with straight white women over gay men or lesbians who were too "Butch" for the group.

This is exceedingly helpful, and also a major confidence booster to hear it took more than a couple tries. It's easy to be hard on myself about how much time and retries and corrections I have to make for my art, but at the end of the day I suppose that's just how it is to be learning! Thanks!!
