New Nullius In Verba episode on miscitations: https://nulliusinverba.podbean.com/e/ep-77-miscitatio/ How often are citations to the scientific literature outright misleading? Do we really need to spell out that people are supposed to read what they cite? And should we review citations as they do in law?

It is absolute incredible what some journals are allowing these days in order to justify poor editorial decisions. We keep coming across implausible/impossible methods all the time now. 🤔🙄

Nature : "More than half of researchers now use AI for peer review" https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-04066-5 "GPT-5 could mimic the structure of a peer-review report and use polished language, but that it failed to produce constructive feedback and made factual errors." Yep, that matches the recent review I had, on the basis of which my manuscript was rejected. Vague criticisms that sound bad but are not actionable. Bigger picture: Nobody has time to do peer review, so many reviews are shoddy. Now shoddy reviews can have AI help, but they're still shoddy reviews. AI's making it worse, but the fundemental issues here are around workloads. #academicchatter

Scicomm matters now more than ever! Returning from a trip to rural USA, realizing the messages so familiar to us are not getting out - both in terms of 1) disruptions to US science and 2) healthcare misinformation. Efforts like https://sciencehomecoming.com/ matter. As you engage, one piece of advice: focus on why what you do matters for them. Careers in rural America (logging, mining, industry) have been decimated over the decades, and there’s a sense that just happens in waves. We must convince them of why it can’t happen to science. It’s a hard sell. I’d love to see really effective examples of it. Know any?

At least it was retracted. Many clearly AI-generated papers that readers flag to supposedly high-quality journals remain up because the journal doesn't want another retraction on its record.

Today is #ISAD, International #stuttering Awareness Day. It’s the first time I have decided to write about my experience as a person who stutters. For a long time, stuttering has been reduced to a medical issue to be fixed, rather than a lived exprience to be understood. But behind the labels of "therapy", "treatment", and "disorder", there are voices, stories, and experiences that cannot be contained by clinical language. https://isad.live/isad-2025/papers-presented-by-2025/stories-and-experiences-with-stuttering-by-pws-2025/who-gets-to-define-my-voice-andrea-callegaro/ #disability #neurodiversity

Not cool for either authors or reviewers: Manuscript with junior first author has gone through two rounds of reviews and both reviewers have reached "The authors have addressed all my concerns," yet now the editor comes with "Before the manuscript can be accepted, (1) please replace your stats with different stats, (2) change the title, (3) don't conclude..., (4) etc etc....
