I mean if we had similar enough vision I think we probably could if we did it together, but I'm so determined to keep the pixel art purity that it's really shooting myself in the foot lol

I've been very stubborn about making my game 2D with sprites only but I swear every time I see the conquest reforged packs used in amazing minecraft or vintage story builds it makes me reconsider doing everything with voxels instead

Real answer I think it's just a convenient excuse to both give the player whatever the "cozy dream thing" is like a cafe or farm or whatever whilst also giving you a long term goal to work towards (paying off the debt)

This is literally all I've wanted for over a decade and a half. It's what everything I do hopefully one day builds towards. Is it all for nothing? I regularly think about that, wondering if it's possible at all, if people will ever get their time back and desire to use it to play make-believe again

The economy is trash, people are working more than they ever have and a lot of people turned to AI out of desperation and somehow found it good enough when it absolutely wasn't. What could possibly bring back any hope for dedicated enforced roleplaying worlds? Persistent long term gritty roleplay?

I was not alive for this time where games like Illarion online had hundreds of people participating in coups, or ultima online had swathes of people making every township and port alive with in character roleplay. Or when MUDs were not full of forgotten accounts connecting from abandoned servers.

Roleplay has fluctuated heavily in its popularity. It went from being "the default" to amassing a core dedicated audience that is spread across the internet. Most roleplaying in online games is shallow without much grit or intrigue and such roleplay is confined to small groups and tabletops.

There was a brief period of time where online games were designed as worlds for stories more than a game to complete. Online games with enforced roleplay standards across the entirety of the server by the game admins themselves. Games where you had humble serfs & bakers conspiring to coup a despot

I mean I'm Australian and I thought third spaces mostly referred to street markets when streets were shared spaces instead of little sectioned off sidewalks where a tired driver could swerve at any moment if you're unlucky. The kind of thing you imagine the street looking like late 19th century?

If I want to know something I merely simulate the entirety of existence inside Godot 5 and then it tells me the answer

Doing more mockups, plants this time. I had borrowed a bunch of plant assets to do tests with but am starting to replace them with my own that actually match the style. Hoping to do more actual gameplay soon instead of just art mockups but it's looking promising! #IndieGameDev #PixelArt #Isometric

my current project plans a review and maybe point me in the right direction, since my background is in art and not programming I'm not as confident and would be honoured to hear back from someone who's spent as long as I have obsessing over this from the technical instead of art side. Thanks!

Hey @deanhall.bsky.social I don't have a reddit account so I've not been able to participate in your AMAs re: brutal framework and most of my development experience is in Godot but have been working towards more general c# knowledge. Since we are both ss13-like maniacs I was curious if you'd give

Western audiences: Wow really? calling the villain 'maladictus blackheart'? Come ooon!!! be creative! Western audiences when they see a small rat girl who uses a sewing needle as a sword in a japanese media franchise: "Oh wow, I really do love [sewblade mousette] she's so cute!"

I fixed the draw sorting for nodes in multi-level tilemap layers in godot, so we can now truly have pseudo 3D worlds with a z axis. Eventually this would probably be better to do in 3D with everything being billboards but hey, it works! Now to get it moving! #IndieGameDev #Isometric #GodotEngine

More isometric pixel art terrain work. Trying to stick up the grass ramps as well but they need a lot more work to be closer to seamless. The rock variations all look really good though! #indiegamedev #pixelart #isometric

To clarify: I don't think AI is good. I don't think "AI" is "AI" as we know it, it's just a fancy pattern matching algorithm. The point is that all the media circus about ai destroying the world is probably a reducing returns inspired funding reach and nothing more

I mean yeah obviously this would be terrible for us as a species, a lot of people would suffer or die or get lost abroad etc but like, preferable to the extinction of the species? I mean I'd say that and I'd probably be one of the victims because I need consistent medical care.

You can tell that the whole "AI is gonna destroy the planet!!!" thing is a fake excuse because if it were true we'd be repeatedly flooding the internet with information stating we can just take down the entire power grid, disable the satellites and render a rogue ai completely powerless within hours

they're straight up banning people for hurting the poor widdle feelings of AI boosters. but meanwhile if you're in charge of the site its ok to call people who don't use AI "delusional liars" so that's cool ps: quoted post said the account(s) got unbanned in a reply but they're still gone for me

Having issues with Godot's sprite rendering not being set up to work for layering like this out of the box. Terrain plays nicely with itself but non-tilemap entities are left out of the layering equation unfortunately Some placeholder plants by infrared baron: www.artstation.com/infrared_baron

A little bit more progress on learning procedural world/terrain generation. Figured out how to distribute tiles to surface cells and utilise a little bit of 3D noise to create overhangs. It's still very rudimentary but I'm having fun regardless. #procgen #indiegamedev #godotengine

Decided that the tiles should be half height from before, started working on slabs and slopes. Still very WIP and messy but I think it looks promising? When I finish tweaking all the slopes for all nature tiles I'll throw them into some terrain gen and test them! #pixelart #isometric #indiedev

I’ve tried several things and none of them have worked particularly well. I’ve tried pixel art shaders mixed with bill boarded sprites and I’ve tried all bill boarded sprites All bill boarded has z fighting issues and no pixel art in 3D I’ve managed to make pixel perfect

I have been trying, I’ve not had much luck as I’m not very good at stylised 3D lookdev like 3D pixel art. My results so far have all been… very rough

yeah idk long shot I guess but if anybody else has ideas for solutions to this problem I'd love to hear them because I'm stuck and have not even the slightest idea how to resolve the issues without picking a compromise that kind of ruins the feel for me

Studio Fae-Wilds @studio-faewilds.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
So I'm really not sure where to go from here. I think this look works well for games like WitchBrook, where the levels are hand authored, but for an editable at runtime game like I wanted to make, I'm sort of at an impasse and I'm not sure there's a good solution for me, leaving the project hanging

Studio Fae-Wilds @studio-faewilds.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
same level interactions too difficult to read for the player. Either you fake the 2D look in 3D (which requires way more work than doing it in 2D or just picking a different art style) or you choose a compromise. Flat terrain + building levels, hard to read terrain, or climb every layer. 4/5 🧵
110
Studio Fae-Wilds @studio-faewilds.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
or why games like space station 13 and space station 14 are either completely top down overhead views with nebulous depth, or have very slight depth but squat characters as tall as they are wide The more even width/height the layers are, the less jarring the transition without making 3/5 🧵
110
Studio Fae-Wilds @studio-faewilds.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
telling what height a hole in the terrain is becomes remarkably difficult to read for the player. It's becoming increasingly clear why games like project zomboid have a flat terrain layer and multiple z layers for buildings, basements and caves 2/5 🧵
110
Studio Fae-Wilds @studio-faewilds.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
I've done more research and tried more world generation and have come to the conclusion that there's too many issues with having isometric terrain like this Either each layer is too tall and z level transitions are abrupt and jarring and nature slopes are too many tiles, or too short and 1/5🧵

even if someone makes something that is a "roleplaying enforced" experience, what do you call it? Calling it a roleplaying game is obvious but the term has been completely subverted to refer to games where nobody is required to roleplay at all, because they happen to share some mechanics with ttrpgs

It's also been the bane of my existence since I'm more of a roleplayer than a gamer and I have spent my whole life chasing roleplaying experiences in games. Not games with stat systems where there's a story, games where other players are making the world feel alive by staying in character
