Wishing all that celebrate a meaningful Yom Kippur! 🌟 Hear from Lottie, as she reflects on navigating eating disorder recovery whilst balancing her faith during the holidays. If you're struggling with disordered eating, head over to @beatedsupport.bsky.social to access resources and their helpline.
Cover slide for a carousel post that says "Navigating Yom Kippur and recovery" with Yom Kippur underlined in orange. It features an illustration of a shofar on a blue background and has the Student Minds logo in the top left corner in an orange box.A blue informative graphic titled 'What is Yom Kippur?'. It explains that it is a significant day in the Jewish year, concluding the '10 Days of Awe' that began with Rosh Hashanah. It notes the focus on a 25-hour fast and the challenges faced by those struggling with disordered eating. The post then encourages swiping to read Lottie’s story on managing life, eating disorder recovery, and university life. Around the edge is an orange arrow swirling around the entire post, and a white Student Minds logo is located on the bottom right. The next quote slide on a blue background says: "Almost all the Jews I know who have struggled with disordered eating will normally choose not to fast, but that doesn't make it easy. Fasting is such a core part of the day, and it's everywhere around you. At first, I struggled with the idea of not being "normal" on such a holy day. But in Judaism, we're taught to live by the rules, not die by them; your health will always come first. Once I truly understood that, Yom Kippur became more meaningful to me... I focused on what I could do, not what I wasn't doing"The final blue background text post says: "I make more of an effort to attend synagogue, I follow prayers more intentionally, and I've created my own tradition where I help prepare the post-fast meal for my friends or family who are fasting. Even though I don't fast, and never will, the day is still incredibly significant to me." with the following text highlighted in a yellow box "It just looks a little bit different."

How you feel is fair

After the excitement of first term, second term can seem like coming back to reality.

This is a normal feeling for students, and remember - if you got through first term, you can get through this!
Stay active and create routines for yourself, with plenty of time for your wellbeing.

Friendships change

It's natural for friendship groups to change at uni, but this can be upsetting. But remember, people are usually happy to make new friends!

Try to take advantage of opportunities to make new friends:

Try joining a society
Or invite a coursemate for coffee

Academic support

Second term can often feel more academically challenging than the first. If you’re struggling, reach out and use the support available at your uni, such as personal tutors and study skills mentors.

Our website also has plenty
of resources to help you figure out what works best for you.

I joined Student Minds as a Student Trustee in April 2023, driven by a genuine belief in the charity’s mission and a strong alignment with its values.

I’d encourage any student to apply, even if you feel you may not have enough experience. When I started, I had limited knowledge of governance, but I was welcomed into a supportive Board that challenged me, listened to me, and encouraged me to grow. I am really proud to be a Trustee of Student Minds and support the charity to achieve its mission and strategy.

If you are passionate about empowering students across the UK and transforming the higher education sector so that no student is held back by their mental health, then definitely apply - the Board needs you!
