I’m comfortable that my arguments are sufficient to at least illustrate moral ambiguity. Ta!

Interesting date to pick from the chapters of history. Berlin/Tokyo in 1945 are another. I’m not blind to the risk of populism, and morality != popular. But society is going to struggle with AI morality for awhile. Really can’t understand why you think it’s so clear.

…to make training only legal if creators are compensated. Non of this is fixed or settled from a societal perspective.

It’s definitely interesting that Alsup found that training was fair use due to the transformational nature of training. That’s one step down the societal path that I mentioned. But I think that’s a far cry from society viewing what the AI companies have done is moral. And laws could be changed…

Please explain why the lawsuits are irrelevant. I’m keen to learn.

stuartwi.bsky.social @stuartwi.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Another question: do you think the media companies are wrong, and that the lawsuits should be thrown out?

stuartwi.bsky.social @stuartwi.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
And that seems ethical to you? You break into someone’s house, make copies of everything they own, and then you get to tell them later what you owe them?

I don’t know why you are so hung up on a brain encoding something. Your brain is not on the internet and you aren’t a frontier model charging for access. The argument makes no sense.

Ooooh, scary prospect. I might be wrong. I’ve been wrong before and I’ll be wrong again. But I don’t think so at the moment. And why did Anthropic pay $1.5B if they didn’t see a problem?

It’s way more complicated than that of course. But my two examples are closer than you seem to be willing to admit.

Look, I’ve been in tech for decades. Model weights definitely encode something or they wouldn’t exist. One could argue that frontier models are a zip file of the internet.

The lawsuits of the media companies suggest they think it’s a devaluation of their work. You may not. That’s all part of the societal evolution I’m talking about.

I made no connection between popularity and morality. I do think that society eventually comes to a conclusion about what is fair, and that Big Tech doesn’t care to wait for that. They just move forward anyway, amass power, and expect everyone to just accept the new reality.

I don’t think John implied that at all. And I agree that there wouldn’t be much point(outside academia ), which is why at AI companies did it anyway. Just because you created something useful doesn’t make it ethical.

stuartwi.bsky.social @stuartwi.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
AI companies lean on “fair use.” But if a model can be coaxed to regurgitate nearly the exact full text of a novel, it has something approximating a copy, which is not fair use. And just because this issue might have been “fixed” through guardrails doesn’t mean that an ethical lapse hasn’t occurred.

stuartwi.bsky.social @stuartwi.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
“Probably isn’t” is not a particularly moral position, and devalues creative work. It’s a pure value judgement with no societal input on what the collective thinks is fair.

stuartwi.bsky.social @stuartwi.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Perhaps I should clarify, as I may have misunderstood your post. What I’m saying is is that the AI companies do t care about the copyrights of others but do care about their own proprietary IP. I think that’s not a particularly ethical stance.

Tell that to the New York Times (among many other media outlets that have sued the AI companies).

While there are lots of open source models, the frontier models aren’t, and they are zealously guarded. “Copyright for Me, but not for Thee.”
110
stuartwi.bsky.social @stuartwi.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Moving forward anyway is the way big tech has worked for the last 10+ years. With AI, there isn’t clear case law (yet) regarding copyright, and the potential was too large for them not to move forward. Your Ethical Mileage May Vary (YEMMV).

No. John’s statement is true. It just would have resulted in a much less capable model, perhaps to the point of being useless.

I had the same question. For those with very low income, ACA can be nearly free. So in theory an unscrupulous broker might sign someone up, but they need to provide proof that this is happening, not just trot out scary statistics about some large percentage not making claims.

I’m not certain of the outcome either, and not sure if China’s actions are positive or negative (long-term) to the US, but it is clear at the moment that China views building and releasing powerful open-source models is in their interest and erodes US AI hegemony, which does affect US AI firms.

Kilmeade quoting Trump from the “Fox News Freedom Bunker” is beyond Orwell’s wildest dreams and impervious to satire. The amount of joy I will have when all this insanity ends will be immeasurable.
