I’ve read some great books recently, and this is one of them. Since retirement. I’m slowing inching my way towards a better understanding of the long 17th Century. @alicehunt.bsky.social

Garn Goch Iron Age hillfort overlooking the magnificent Tywi Valley in Carmarthenshire. With a total enclosed space of 16.6ha, Garn Goch is one of the biggest hillforts in Wales. Strangely, I had this hugely evocative place entirely to myself. #HillfortsWednesday #Wales 📷 By me, last Thursday

The plaque below marks the house where the infamous Duke of Cumberland slept prior to the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746. It can be found at No. 38 High Street, Nairn, but you wouldn’t find it if you didn’t know where to look. The battle was undoubtedly an awful affair. #Jacobites #Culloden

Pont Britannia. Originally a wrought iron tubular bridge designed by Robert Stephenson. It opened in 1850 to complete the rail link between London and Holyhead. The bridge was destroyed by fire in 1970 and given new life by the addition of the steel arches now so dominant. #engineeringhistory

Cambridge city centre is so affluent it seems almost opulent. It’s difficult to believe it’s in the same country as Burnley (my hometown). Whatever happened to regional policy?

Here lies the grave of John Loudon McAdam: Engineer and Road Builder. He invented the process known as ‘macadamisation’ for building roads with a smooth hard surface. An invention which undoubtedly changed the modern world. I stumbled across his uncelebrated grave in Moffat in the Scottish Borders.

Today I visited Swarkestone Bridge over the River Trent (south of Derby). This was the most southerly point reached by the Jacobite Army on 4th December 1745. They retreated from here all the way to Culloden. What would have happened had they carried on to London? #Jacobites

This is the location where the A329(M) crosses the River Loddon near Reading. It’s the site of a famous falsework collapse on 24 October 1972. Three construction workers killed and ten injured when the part-poured deck fell in the river due to a design error. The site remains very prone to flooding.
