Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 26/09/2026From the Pont Aven ferry a couple of hours out of Santander on August 27th I had 8 Pintail flying west in the Bay of Biscay, a strange sighting and something interesting to see in an otherwise pretty empty sea. 020
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Great day out to Seaton Wetlands yesterday with @mave23.bsky.social where the Pectoral Sandpiper showed very well along with Ruff, Wood Sandpiper, 2 Curlew Sandpiper and 2 Spotted Redshank although the star of the show was an Osprey fishing in front of the Tower Hide #devonbirds 0150
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 03/09/2026There was actually water on Blaxton Meadow this morning where my First Plym Glossy Ibis was a nice surprise, also single Knot, Ringed Plover & Black- & Bar-tailed Godwit present. A Spotted Flycatcher, 3 late Swift over & the Wood Duck back on the duck pond with the Mandarins also of note #devonbirds 0201
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 15/08/2026A Great White Egret along the River Plym this afternoon was unexpected (with thanks to finder Peter C & messenger Pete A). My only Plym record has been of 3 together in 2023 so it's about time another showed up as the nearby Somerset breeding population goes from strength to strength #devonbirds 0160
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 08/08/2026An egg-laying Brown Hairstreak today in Devon completes my butterflying year #ukbutterflies 0170
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 24/07/2026I'm always amazed at what turns up in my moth box in my innercity courtyard garden here in Plymouth, this morning it was graced by my first Eastern Bordered Straw #teammoth 0260
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 19/07/2026While taking another look at the Small Red-eyed Damselflies at Drakes Reservoir on North Hill in Plymouth today I was very pleased to find at least 2 Red-veined Darters, my first in the UK #Dragonfly #Damselflies 070
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Yes, it has been a deliberate action by the National Trust to raise the sluice gates to prevent water flowing in except on the very highest of tides. Not sure what they are trying to achieve but it has had a dramatic effect on the birdlife utilising the Meadow. 000
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 15/07/2026Yes,it is pretty poor of the NT. The Meadow is bone dry and covered in weeds, not exactly salt marsh conservation work and no good for the waders that used it. All very depressing. 010
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 14/07/2026Local discussions have proved fruitless. No environmental impact study undertaken before starting the project. Years of data provided by local birders on the birds using the Meadow have been ignored. Very depressing. 120
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 14/07/2026No, the sluice gates are now closed to salt water ingress except for on the very high tides. Apparently they have had a grant from DEFRA or someone to create a saltmarsh but are managing to destroy the saltmarsh already there and revert it back to grassland, very sad and a loss for the Waders. 100
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 14/07/2026The National Trust at Saltram continue their environmental vandalism of Blaxton Meadow, once a muddy home for feeding Waders and now presumably being reverted back to a cricket pitch #Saltram#NationalTrust 7112
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 13/07/2026Ridiculously hot on a visit to Upton Towans near Hayle at the weekend, the trains were a bit of a nightmare too but I did manage to find the hoped for Brown Argus & Silver-studded Blues although in the heat they were very active and restless #ukbutterflies 070
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 08/07/2026The same for me, quite weird watching them flying about over the Bracken and not up in the Oaks. Must be too hot for them too! 010
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 08/07/2026Quite a few Purple Hairstreaks low down on the Bracken on a Dartmoor walk today, probably trying to escape the heat. A Small Tortoiseshell was a rare surprise too. #ukbutterflies 1121
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 08/07/2026Mad Dogs & Englishmen (& Butterflyers) Go Out in the Midday Sun! A final look for the year at the very flitty Fritillaries on Dartmoor in baking hot weather this morning was worth it but very glad to get back home and cool down #ukbutterflies 060
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Two unexpected butterfly sightings on a trip to Luxembourg last week - a female Lesser Purple Emperor of the pale form clytie on a shop window along the high street of Esch-Sur-Alzette (probably to escape the heat) and at least 3 Marbled Fritillary at the top of the chairlift at Vianden #Butterflies 050
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 23/06/2026Like buses, another 4 Fritillary day on Dartmoor yesterday. 2 Silver-washed and a Small Pearl-bordered were camera shy and the heat meant the High Brown and Dark Green were hyperactive but I managed some decent views before I started to melt in the very hot sunshine #ukbutterflies 0130
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 22/06/2026The Purple Hairstreaks had emerged amongst the White-letter Hairstreaks at Oreston yesterday while nearby 6-Spot Burnet were on the wing with many mating pairs seen and being watched by Burnet Companions #ukbutterflies #teammoth 0180
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 21/06/2026The Fritillaries were far too flitty in the hot sunshine on Dartmoor yesterday but a surprise find were 2 White Admiral in a woodland glade. Even more of a surprise was hearing 2 Nightjars briefly churring together at 4pm in the afternoon! #ukbutterflies 0120
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 14/06/2026A 4 Fritillary day on Dartmoor today with singles of High Brown, Silver-washed and Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary and around 7 Dark Green Fritillary all seen. Don't think I've ever had a 4 Fritillary day before. #ukbutterflies 0160
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 05/06/2026Surprised to find a few tardy waders along the beach at Wembury this morning with a Whimbrel, a Dunlin and 4 Sanderling still present #devonbirds 0141
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 03/06/2026With 4 White-letter Hairstreak being reported yesterday at a site in Plymouth I headed out this morning for a look about in less than ideal weather conditions. Very pleased to find just 1 but my earliest ever sighting. A few Bee Orchids also seen nearby. #UKButterflies 060
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 29/05/2026Still too hot for me but the butterflies on the edge of Dartmoor were loving it yesterday, Painted Lady were everywhere and there has been a good emergence of Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary. The heat has meant they are very active and getting any photos was a bit challenging #UKButterflies 180
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 26/05/2026Thank you, was hoping it was a faded but rare migrant moth but never mind! 000
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 25/05/2026That is so weird, when I ran it through ObsIdentify I got totally different "guesses"! 100
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 25/05/2026I found this moth in the day time at Wembury on the South Devon coast, very faded so presumably unidentifiable but any ID help gratefully received @mothiduk.bsky.social 332
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 24/05/2026The hot weather is not to my liking but the flowers and insects are loving it with Dingy Skipper, Southern Marsh Orchid, Green Hairstreak and Large Skipper all seen this morning at another site in Plymouth due for development soon #ukbutterflies 0183
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 20/05/2026A miserable morning of weather at Wembury was brightened up by 37 Sanderling along the beach with 8 Dunlin, 7 Turnstone and 5 Whimbrel. Also 1st summer Common- & Mediterranean Gulls feeding in the surf and 3 1st summer Kittiwakes flying west offshore. And someone has lost a buoy. #devonbirds 0131

High Brown Fritillarybritainsfavouritebutterfly.co.ukHigh Brown Fritillary - Britain’s Favourite ButterflyThe High Brown Fritillary is one of the 60 beautiful butterflies found across the UK. Will it be Britain's Favourite Butterfly?. 010
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 13/05/2026A bit of wader passage at Wembury today with singles of Grey Plover, Bar-tailed Godwit and Ringed Plover, 4 Sanderling, 5 Dunlin, at least 6 flighty & mobile Whimbrel and 31 Turnstone present amongst the usual Oystercatchers #devonbirds 1152
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 12/05/2026After a 2 hour search on Friday 8th May I finally found 2 Dingy Skipper at a site in Plymouth, sadly they will now be the last I will see here as the site will shortly have houses built on it #ukbutterflies 0163
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 01/05/2026At least 7 Painted Lady at Wembury Point in Devon this morning along with 5 Green Hairstreaks, a Small Copper and a male Brimstone #UKButterflies 0100
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 01/05/2026I managed to get to Wembury Point for the early morning ebbing high tide today before the dog walkers arrived and enjoyed some wonderful views of 23 variously plumaged Bar-tailed Godwits feeding along the beach #devonbirds 090
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 18/04/2026Thanks for the info Martin, I'll send the record on to Dr Reynolds. It was a strange sight, I thought it was a fish hook when I first saw it but then it wiggled it around and I realised it was its tongue! It was fit and healthy looking though so obviously coping with the deformity. 110
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 18/04/2026A trip down to St.Ives yesterday where The Pallas's Warbler in Trewyn Gardens didn't stay still for a second. A Herring Gull with its tongue hanging out under its bill was scrounging food near the train station while the Bonaparte's Gull showed very well at the nearby Hayle Estuary #cornwallbirds 1151
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 08/04/2026Interesting to watch a pair of Adders getting frisky in the sunshine today although the larger female seemed quite unimpressed by the males attentions. 040
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 08/04/2026Green Hairstreaks at Wembury today, my earliest date ever. The human world may be getting increasingly darker but Mother Nature just carries on to remind us that there is still beauty in the world #butterflies 070
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 01/04/2026After being present for over 3 months I thought it was about time I headed down to Boscathnoe Reservoir near Penzance to have a look at the wintering Dusky Warbler and it showed very well indeed. Also a bonus Bonaparte's Gull on the Hayle Estuary before heading home #Cornwallbirds 0110
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 07/03/2026Ha! Back in Plymouth but still feeling like I'm on Japanese time! 😂 010
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 07/03/2026Finding a 1st winter Bonaparte's Gull on The Plym wasn't on my radar this morning but it was a very nice surprise, my first in Plymouth #devonbirds 3523
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 06/03/2026A few familiar birds from the UK also seen in Japan, some 6000 miles away. No House Sparrows present but Tree Sparrows very common, even in the cities. 0150
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 06/03/2026Very pleased to see Steller's Eagle in Japan, a beast of a bird with 6 seen, and also pleased to see Azure-winged Magpie after failing to see them in Spain. 180
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 06/03/2026Sika Deer and Japanese Macaque showed very well on our tour of Japan and the only mammals seen. 050
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 06/03/2026Amazing trip to Japan on a non-birding holiday but with some interesting bird sightings along the way including Tancho (Red-crowned Cranes), the symbols of longevity, good fortune and fidelity in Japanese culture. 070
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 02/02/2026Caspian Gull may have been a no-show for me at Brixham on 31/1/26 but a Black-throated Diver showed incredibly well amongst the many GNDivers also present. 3 Purple Sandpiper, 1 Med.Gull, 1 RTDiver, Razorbill, Gannet, Kittiwake, Guillemot & Grey Seals also kept me entertained #devonbirds 170

Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 24/01/2026Interesting post-Storm Ingrid walk around Plymouth Hoe this morning with the star bird a very smart adult Little Gull feeding in The Cattewater amongst BHGulls and 5 Kittiwake. Also 8 Purple Sandpiper at Rusty Anchor, my highest ever count here, & a male Black Redstart nearby #devonbirds 0140
Stuart Green @stuart17.bsky.social · 22/01/2026I couldn't find the Water Pipit along the beach today at Wembury but the presumed Siberian Chiffchaff was still present and showing very well #devonbirds 0190
