@autistics
Masking has a physical cost: years of suppressing who you are doesn’t stay in the mind.

HPA axis dysregulation: Chronic masiking elevates long‐term cortisol, eventually fatiguing the stress‐response system.

Elevated autoimmune & chronic illness rates: Autistic adults show significantly higher rates of autoimmune, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal disorders linked to chronic masking stress.

Identity erosion & self‐loss: Long‐term masking causes loss of authentic preferences, communication style, and sense of self.

Chronic physical exhaustion: Masking is a measurable resource drain, with participants reporting physical collapse and multi‐day recovery after sustained social performance.

Performing neurotypicality for years is a chronic stressor. The body keeps the score.
