Scam of the day: Pension scams. What they want: Your pension pot, transferred into a scheme or investment they control. Red flag: A promise of access before the legal minimum age. How it works, the red flags and what to do: streetowl.co.uk/scam-avoidance-database #ScamAwareness #FraudPrevention
StreetOwl scam avoidance: Investments & pensions. Pension scams. Also: free pension review · pension liberation · pension unlocking · transfer to a SIPP. What they want: Your pension pot, transferred into a scheme or investment they control. How it works: A 'free pension review' by phone, online or through a friend leads to a transfer into a self-invested pension holding exotic assets (overseas property, storage pods, forestry, carbon credits, unlisted shares) that pay the introducer a large commission and are worth little. The moment they push you to act: Signing the transfer forms. Once the money is in the new scheme it is invested in the unsellable asset, and the fees are taken. Red flags: An unsolicited cold call about your pension: illegal since 9 January 2019 unless you asked for it. A promise of access before the legal minimum age. Investments that are overseas, unregulated, or hard to sell. Being rushed, or asked to sign forms that are not fully filled in. Scam of the day: Courier fraud (police or bank 'investigation'). What they want: Your bank cards, cash or PIN, collected from your door by a 'courier'. How it works, the red flags and what to do: streetowl.co.uk/scam-avoidance-database #ScamAwareness #FraudPrevention
StreetOwl scam avoidance: Someone official. Courier fraud (police or bank 'investigation'). Also: card collection scam · counterfeit note scam · detective call. What they want: Your bank cards, cash or PIN, collected from your door by a 'courier'. How it works: A caller says they are a police officer (they give a name, a rank and a collar number) or a bank investigator. Your card has been cloned, or bank staff are issuing counterfeit notes, and you can help the investigation. The moment they push you to act: Handing cash, cards or goods to the courier, or reading your PIN down the phone. Victims are often told to cut a card in half — with the chip intact. Red flags: The police will never ask you to withdraw money, hand over your cards, buy goods or take part in a secret operation. The caller asks you to call back to verify them, and the line does not properly clear. You are told not to discuss it with anyone. Where to report: Hang up. Wait five minutes or use another phone, then call 159 for your bank and 101 for the police (999 if the courier is on the way). Happening right now? Hang up or close the message first. StreetOwl scam avoidance: Payments & cards. Authorised push payment (APP) fraud — the mechanism. Also: bank transfer scam · Faster Payments fraud. What they want: A transfer that you make, to an account they control — because a payment you authorise is the hardest to reverse. How it works: Almost every scam on this page ends the same way: you send money by bank transfer. Faster Payments settle in seconds, the receiving account (a mule's, or one opened with stolen identity) is emptied within minutes, and the money is split and moved abroad or into crypto. The moment they push you to act: Pressing send. Red flags: Anyone telling you what to say to your bank. Being asked to split a payment into several smaller ones. StreetOwl scam avoidance: Buying & selling. Fake online shops and social-media sellers. Also: too-good-to-be-true deals · Instagram boutique · counterfeit goods. What they want: Payment for goods that are never sent, or are fake — plus your card details. How it works: An advert on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok, or a search result, for a brand at 70% off, a sold-out console, a puppy, a heat pump grant. The site is professional and has reviews. You pay by card or, increasingly, by bank transfer 'because our card machine is down'. The moment they push you to act: Checkout. Bank transfer is the tell — it has no chargeback. Red flags: Prices far below every other seller. A site only weeks old (check a domain lookup), no address, no phone, a contact form only. Payment by bank transfer, crypto or gift card only. Reviews that are all five stars and all the same week. Where to report: Your card provider first; Report Fraud; report the advert to the platform. Happening right now? Scam of the day: Romance scam. What they want: Money, sent by someone who believes they are in a relationship — repeatedly, for as long as it lasts. How it works, the red flags and what to do: streetowl.co.uk/scam-avoidance-database #ScamAwareness #FraudPrevention
StreetOwl scam avoidance: Romance & relationships. Romance scam. Also: catfishing · military romance · oil-rig engineer. What they want: Money, sent by someone who believes they are in a relationship — repeatedly, for as long as it lasts. How it works: A profile on a dating site or a friend request on social media; attentive, affectionate, quickly moving the conversation to WhatsApp. They are abroad — a soldier, an engineer on a rig, a doctor with a charity — which explains why they cannot meet or video call. Weeks or months of daily contact build a real bond. The moment they push you to act: Each request for money, escalating in size; also requests to send gift-card codes, to open accounts, or to invest 'together' (see pig butchering). Red flags: They cannot video call, and cannot meet, for reasons that keep changing. Declarations of love within days; requests for money within weeks. Their photos appear elsewhere under another name (a reverse image search shows this). Friends and family are warned off. Where to report: Report Fraud, and the platform. Victim Support offers free help. Happening right now? Hang up or close the message first. Scam of the day: Fake trading platform (crypto, forex, shares). What they want: Deposits into a platform they own; the 'balance' you watch grow is a picture. How it works, the red flags and what to do: streetowl.co.uk/scam-avoidance-database #ScamAwareness #FraudPrevention
StreetOwl scam avoidance: Investments & pensions. Fake trading platform (crypto, forex, shares). Also: investment platform scam · AI trading bot · guaranteed returns. What they want: Deposits into a platform they own; the 'balance' you watch grow is a picture. How it works: An advert, a social-media post or a message from someone you have been chatting to introduces a trading platform — crypto, forex, gold, an 'AI bot'. A friendly account manager helps you open an account and deposit a small sum, £250 or so. Within days the dashboard shows it has doubled. The moment they push you to act: Each new deposit, and above all the 'release fee' to withdraw — which is where the largest single loss usually happens. Red flags: Returns that are guaranteed, or far above anything a bank or index pays. The firm is not on the FCA register, or is on the FCA Warning List, or is a 'clone' of a real firm using its number with a different phone and email. A fee to withdraw your own money. Pressure to borrow or to cash in a pension. Where to report: The FCA (report a scam at fca.org.uk/scamsmart) and Report Fraud. Happening right now? Hang up or close the message first.
