A surprise REM cameo. “In sworn testimony from 1974 (acquired by the R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, an unexpected collector of Cohn memorabilia), Cohn — who was ‘audacious about his tax insolence’ — claimed he had lost millions of dollars in the stock market. An F.B.I. memo shows that was not true.”

One of the themes in Zohran’s dad’s work is the historic malleability of identity and colonialism’s desire to impose a fixed definition for that identity as a method of control, which is an interesting context for that NYT story.

Voted early in Brooklyn. It was packed like I’ve never seen for a non-presidential election. Certainly not for local primaries. Zohran supporters are tremendously excited to vote. The only obviously non-Zohran voter there was Chuck Schumer.

A lot going on right now but I still think it's crazy that the NY state budget is a week overdue because the governor is holding it hostage to a retrogressive policy demand based on a claim for which neither she nor anyone else have offered *any* supporting evidence. hellgatenyc.com/tisch-cant-s...

The funniest moment in Lebanon's presidential election today: one member of parliament voted for US Senator Bernie Sanders. That prompted Nabih Berri, speaker of the Lebanese parliament, to exclaim, شو؟ - "what?" Unfortunately, the vote was annulled and expunged from the final tally.

#TwinPeaks Ep. 4 DVD commentary: Tim Hunter: We were encouraged to do as much as we could. I will always remember [this] as the llama episode. I’d been driving through Topanga Canyon and seeing llamas, so, I said, can you get me a llama? And I showed up on the set and there was the llama.

Every few years when Peggy Noonan enters the discourse a new generation gets to be introduced to this quote.
I first saw President Reagan as a foot, highly polished brown cordovan
wagging merrily on a hassock. I spied it through the door. It was a beautiful foot, sleek. Such casual elegance and clean lines! But not a big foot, not formidable, maybe a little ...frail.
I imagined cradling it in my arms, protecting it from unsmooth roads.

Ok, it’s CIA story time, because a great forthcoming book revisits the agency’s role in the assassination of Patrice Lumumba and its extensive deception around that — largely the work of its man in Congo, Larry Devlin, whom the CIA honored during its Torture Era.

Saw the new Fugazi doc and thought about how when I was getting into music and saw live footage, I only wanted to see the band and would get annoyed by crowd shots. Now I love to see who went to shows, who made up the scene in that time and place, in all their awkward glory.
