slate.com/culture/2022... Stephanie Burt, do not slander that man like this.
It’s hard to characterize McKuen’s fame, with its mix of books, music, and TV, in a contemporary context. “It would have been some combination of Rupi Kaur, Jimmy Kimmel, and Ed Sheeran,” said Stephanie Burt, a poet and critic who teaches at Harvard. “He was really that level of everyone knows who this person is.”

I mean, say what you want about Murakami, and you can say a lot, but this quote goes hard as fuck, especially if you're fourteen.
"God only exists in people's minds. Especially in Japan, God's always been a kind of flexible concept. Look at what happened to the war. Douglas MacArthur ordered the divine emperor to quit being a god...and he did, making a speech saying that he was just an ordinary person." - Haruki Murakami

In the months to come, I’d jot down scraps of overheard conversation: “We’re going to interrogate him with truth serum,” “No one is linking except Tucker,” “You know Kirk and Erika were arranged,” “Hitler would have gone broke on her OnlyFans,” “Do you have a contact for Vance?” Much of it was unsurprising, especially for anyone who’d spent time on X. All the knowing gossip and based memes were part of a game of one-upmanship among intellectuals who styled themselves as insiders. Still, there was something jarring about seeing this very online culture in the flesh.

...I am now painfully and embarrassedly aware that I went on a rant about "where are all the good surreal first-person adventure games" and the answer is staring up at me from my Steam library like "am I a fucking joke to you"

I can't tell if this book is incoherent or if I'm stupid. I wanted to read a more put together, more conventionally deranged novel after the sprawling family tree of love and death that was Sailor and Lula. I have made a mistake.

Tis the season. Almost.
Lake September 9, 2001. Gary and I were skating at a hospital on top of a huge hill overlooking a valley. An ambulance drove up and took out a dead woman. Gary asked me why she wasn't moving or blinking. I said they hadn't closed her eyes yet.

I don't consider this a series of novels. I consider it one sprawling eight hundred page southern gothic epic about serial murder, mobsters, divine causal intervention, petty crime, and some of the most gorgeous scenery and ma ever put to page.

15. Recommend/review a book. Slasher Summer by E.L. Chen is perhaps one of the cruelest examinations of slasher media, tying it directly to the inability to escape who we are when we come home, and the idea that (shout out to Bambara) no one ever leaves their small hometowns. Ending's meh, but.

1. The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. Since I was ten, I read the book over and over again. I'd take it out repeatedly like once or twice a year. Eventually, I bought it and my dad, who put me on to the book in the first place, went "Don't you have it memorized?" Unfortunately, no.

If sword and sorcery is having its day in the sun, the Peter Weir-esque wave cresting upon the horizon of that sunny beach is the psychotronic sword and sorcery heralded by @spookhouse.bsky.social and @goresorcerer.bsky.social. Darkvoid Deathship bangs. A couple of pacing quirks, but solid fun.

This passage hit especially hard this week. Can't possibly tell you why.
Long before generative AI, I watched doctoral scholars critique entire texts on the basis of a phrase or paragraph taken out of context. I attended scholarly talks and read celebrated works in which the theatrical performance of deep understanding obscured the presenter’s lack of even basic familiarity with the subject.

26. The Extremist by Peter Milligan and Ted McKeever - A woman puts on a gimp mask and murders people with a katana for a secret society of fetishists while searching for her husband's murderer. Might also be about identity, superheroes, and self-annihilation. Whatever it is, it's bleak and nasty.

25. Tales Designed to Thrizzle by Michael Kupperman - An absurd "comic magazine" anthology where a kids' section tells you how to mix drinks for your parents and Picasso threatens to chop people into little cubes. Still some of the funniest stuff I've read in any medium, period.

24. Tekkonkinkreet by Taiyo Matsumoto - A slice of life urban fantasy about two "stray cats" named Black and White who live together in a city called Treasure Town slowly gains darker and darker elements as new threats force them to grow up emotionally. Fantastic art, weird plot, and a gutpunch.

23. Hyperthick by Steve Aylett et. al. - Aylett brings his "brand new sentence" style to a vintage-style crime anthology comic where strange existentialists break into houses and men punch tigers on fire escapes for incomprehensible reasons. You cannot read Aylett and stay reasonable.

21. Achewood by Chris Onstad - A hyperliterate, surreal comic first appearing on the web before being collected into books, written on the very DNA of everyone who used the internet in the 2000s. Simplistic but beautiful, hilarious but elegaic, terrifying but tender. The great American graphic novel
