In today's First Reading the play between faith and the Law is dominant. As people whose faith is in Christ Jesus, we are driven to follow the only law that matters: the law of love. Everything undertaken with the love of Christ is undertaken according to God's will.

The Law will not justify anyone in the sight of God, because we are told: the righteous man finds life through faith. (Galatians 3:11)

Just as a good and loving parent would only give their child what is good, so God will only give us what is good for us. Let us be persistent in prayer, asking for our needs and the needs of others, knowing that God hears us and will delight in responding!

Jesus said to his disciples: 'Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For the one who asks always receives; the one who searches always finds; the one who knocks will always have the door opened to him.' (Lk 11:9-10)

There is nothing we can pray that will ever surpass what is contained in the Lord's Prayer. The Lord's Prayer is the "perfect prayer". Let us pray it attentively and with conviction, not as simply a conclusion to an event or another prayer. This is the prayer of the Lord himself!

Jesus said to the disciples, ‘Say this when you pray: ‘“Father, may your name be held holy, your kingdom come; give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us. And do not put us to the test.”’ (Luke 11:2-4)

07 October: Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. This feast was instituted by Pope Pius V to celebrate the defeat of the Turks at the battle of Lepanto in 1571. It was felt the prayers of the Rosary confraternity in Rome helped in the victory. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us!

Today's Gospel is not asking us to make a choice about whether we should be a Mary or a Martha. It is important that we embrace the core of each. Contemplation must lead to action, and all action must have a basis in prayer and reflection. Saints Martha and Mary, pray for us!

The Parable of the Good Samaritan shows us that the Samaritan, free of the scruples of Jewish Law, was able to love as God calls us to. As Christians, we are free to do the same, since the only law we are called to be observant of is the Law of Love, modelled by Jesus himself.

The lawyer replied to Jesus, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.’ ‘You have answered right,’ said Jesus ‘do this and life is yours.’ (Luke 10:27-28)

The Parable of the Tenants that we hear today challenges us about our work in the Lord's vineyard. To what extent are we prepared to see unlikely people as prophets, urging us to build the kingdom, rather than wanting to build it in our image, and not God’s?

In answer to the revelation of God which he has been granted Job can only bow his head, admit his incapacity to understand, and welcome this new depth of knowledge, or rather experience of God. - Dom Henry Wansbrough OSB May we show the same humility before the Creator, too!

Job said: 'I have been holding forth on matters I cannot understand, on marvels beyond me and my knowledge. I knew you then only by hearsay; but now, having seen you with my own eyes, I retract all I have said, and in dust and ashes I repent.' (Job 42:3,5-6)

Though we cannot see angels, our faith reminds us that God is always watching over us, protecting us, guiding us, inspiring us and assisting us in our needs. Guardian angels are effectively manifestations for us of God's presence in our lives in myriad ways. #guardianangels

Despite his suffering and the feeling that God is the cause of it, Job nonetheless proclaims that God will also be the cause of his healing. Such faith does not come without prayer, trust and lived experience. May we know that God is a God of love and compassion, not vengeance.

As we continue to read from the Book of Job, we hear Job wisely acknowledge the supreme power and knowledge of God. No matter what we may think in any situation, we stand before God as God's creatures, subject to God's will, but also open to God's mercy and compassion.

The Lord asked Satan, ‘Did you notice my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.’ ‘Yes,’ Satan said ‘but stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his possessions...he will curse you to your face.’ (Job 1:8,11)
