As an autistic mom of two neurodivergent kids, trying to model how to deal with my limits in a healthy way has been a hard earned lesson. Nonetheless, it's one I'm always trying to learn and relearn. welleatyouupweloveyouso.substack.com/p/attempting...

My pastor said, “Fear makes you concerned, but not actually change the things you are concerned about.” While he’s speaking about the fear of hell, this applies to climate change too. Plenty of people are fearful, yet we lack mass action. How can we give people who are fearful the tools to change?

An actual of a lot of these Silicon Valley folks is the idea of "Roko's Basilik." It’s basically the idea that there will be an all-powerful AI and it will punish anyone who didn't support its advancement, so we need to support it. Yes, that's exactly as eye-rollingly absurd as it sounds.

For those freaking out about the recent warning from tech bros about AI, there are real threats from AI - constant surveillance, reducing trust in reality, the electricity used - but not the ones that they claim there are. Take anything these folks say, risk or benefit, with a giant grain of salt.

It’s one thing for media to be influenced by big advertisers; it’s another for the corporation to have literally founded and running the publication. Sadly, it wouldn’t surprise me to see more and more of this, especially using AI instead of local reporters: floodlightnews.org/chevron-owns...

It’s such a rite of passage, even if my kids were grumbling about it. They were being bums who didn’t feel like leaving the house, but I was working from home and needed to focus. So I sent them to our downtown (both walkable and bus rideable) to get boba tea.

Kids staying in off-campus housing? Make sure they have all the safety devices they need. Ham optional.
A box of safety devices packed and ready for college. There is a fire extinguisher, smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, flashlight, and bike helmet. There is also a full baked ham. Inside the ham is a glowing universe. The text reads: Some of these are safety devices every college kid needs and one is a ham that contains a pocket universe! Pack the safety, leave the celestial ham! Make sure kids pack safety devices they’ll need for their apartments. Don’t forget a helmet if they ride a scooter, bike, or hoverboard.

When you look at animals as animals and realize their radically different ways of being in the world from humans, it is so eye-opening. Anthropomorphism isn’t a problem in my opinion because it gives animals traits they don’t have - it’s a problem because it looks at animals with such a narrow lens.
