The group's mercenaries remain brutal actors who continue to commit atrocities and alleged war crimes. A reminder of the legacy left behind Yevgeny Prigozhin.

11/11 Togo illustrates a broader trend in Russia's African strategy. Whether this cooperation remains limited or develops into a more permanent military presence will depend on future decisions in both Moscow and Lomé. Either way, the Gulf of Guinea become an important arena in Russia's policy.

10/11 For Russia, the benefits are equally clear: expanding geopolitical influence, securing an Atlantic logistics node, reinforcing support for Sahelian partners, and strengthening its long-term position in West Africa.

9/11 For Togo, closer cooperation could strengthen counterinsurgency capabilities and expand access to military expertise. At the same time, opposition parties have raised concerns over transparency and the possible consequences of hosting foreign military personnel.

8/11 Unlike the Wagner model, Russia relies on a institutional framework. Military cooperation agreements, followed by ratification, equipment deliveries, military advisors, training programs, intelligence cooperation and joint exercises. The Africa Corps has become the centerpiece of this approach.

6/11 Why does Russia care about Togo? For Moscow, Togo offers something strategically valuable: access to the Gulf of Guinea. After expanding its presence across the Sahel, Russia appears increasingly interested in establishing partnerships with West Africa's coastal states.

4/11 Why is Togo strengthening ties with Russia? The answer lies largely in security. Since late 2021, northern Togo has faced an increasing spillover of jihadist violence from neighboring Burkina Faso. Strengthening the Togolese Armed Forces has become a strategic priority.
