Much later than I wanted to, but a new version of Spark is available to download! 🥳 It’s also a much smaller update than I thought it’d be, but at least now Spark has a new #LiquidGlass icon. 🤩 #BuildInPublic #iOSDev #IndieDev #IndieHacker

So… I’ve just learned that most of my adoration for #AppIntents was premature. 😆 I discovered why they didn’t work from actionable notifications, by having the same issue when I tried to use them in .onMove. 😬 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

It looks like two weeks in a row I’m coming back to you with an update. 😅 Again, #TestFlight one, but I’m now much closer to a full update! Today I finished introducing #AppIntents to @letspark.it They aren’t available from Shortcuts or Siri, but they helped me clean up code.

As usual, if you‘d like to help make @letspark.it better, or just use the best #HabitTracker there is (😝) for free, just send me a DM and I’ll send you an #TestFlight invite. 😉

I’m back! 🥳 I had some tough times, caught a cold… Generally not the best period. 😅 I’m still not 100% healthy and strong, but back nonetheless. I even brought the Spark update with me! 😱 New #TestFlight version, but the update is an update, it still counts! 😜 #BuildInPublic #iOSDev #IndieDev

Working on a new schema (at last 😆), I decided I need to move my data interaction to app intents (yet another excuse 😅), as then I'll have one point to change my logic after schema migration. However, that means I need to extract my logic first, and it made me realize one thing…

We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

I have to more often say publicly that I don’t have much time to do something, I guess… I’ve sat for a moment to optimize the calendar view before migrating to a new schema, and it happened that I had a lot of opportunities to do so. 😅 #BuildInPublic #iOSDev #IndieDev

It took me much longer than I wanted, but I started at last moving the new calendar view out of the playground project into Spark, and I must admit the results are great. 😊 Not only can you now easily go through history, but the calendar now scrolls naturally. 😁 #BuildInPublic #iOSDev #IndieDev
Two smartphones displaying the "Write a Journal" habit in the Spark habit tracker app. The left phone shows a detailed monthly calendar view for September, highlighting completed days with blue circles. The right phone displays a summary view with a grid of completion dots for June, July, August, and September, emphasizing the 59-day streak and a 3-day streak type. Both screens use a dark theme with purple and blue accents.

I just got the moment of peak engineering! I struggled with an infinitely scrolling calendar timeline. I tried a few approaches, but none of them worked as intended (to say the least 😆). Then it struck me! #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

Am I 2 days late? Perhaps, but better late than never, am I right? 😅 I must admit I planned to prepare Spark for iOS 26 release date, but I got distracted, dove into new calendar view, and you know how it sometimes can be.

I got an idea of how to express pauses in UI at last! That's why you can't see it in the attached video. 😆 You can see the alpha version of the new calendar view. It still requires a lot of work. Especially adding the mentioned pauses. 😅

Recently I started thinking about my #BuildInPublic journey and I got to the conclusion that I took a wrong approach. I set myself a goal to post every day no matter what, and the same goal when it comes to working on some project.

I’m disappointed with yesterday’s #AppleEvent, I truly believed that the presentation would convince me to buy a new iPhone, but instead all I’ll do is change a battery in my 14 Pro. I guess that’s better for both my wallet and planet. 😆

I thought that Monday after vacation would be the worst, but it’s Tuesday that got me. 🥲 Nonetheless, I squeezed some #iOSDev work just before the #AppleEvent, and I’m ready to watch now. 😅
A person holding an iPad displaying the "Awe dropping. Apple Event Bingo" board, featuring a grid of iconic Apple product announcements and features, such as "iPhone 17 Announced," "Apple Watch Ultra 3," "120Hz Display," and "Pro iPhones Return to Aluminum Case." The iPad screen shows a colorful, interactive bingo game. In the background, a TV displays the Apple logo with a vibrant, swirling effect. The scene is set in a room with light-colored walls and a window.

I give up on fine-tuned setting of number on badge for Spark for now. I don’t know whether I did something wrong, or the API is really that constrained. I'll stick to setting the number to be equal to the unhandled notification count. 🤷 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

As today is the last day of my vacation (🥲), I decided not to work on any #iOSDev stuff and just relax… Until I got a better idea of how to handle badge count for notifications. 🤣 So, I’ve just drafted the code for that. 😅 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #IndieDev

I love spending half of the evening debugging Swift concurrency issues in old APIs 😩 I wanted to clean up a notification delegate, use the modern async version of methods, and ended up with some error deep inside the framework. 🫤 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

I needed to fix a few small things, but badges work fine. ☺️ Now I got back to the new schema and got a dilemma… I don’t know how I should handle the situation when someone changes the habit frequency. #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

Aleksander Stojanowski @stojanowski.dev · 04/09/2025
Once again, instead of facing schema migration, I escaped into refactoring… 😆 This time, however, I feel justified! The biggest problem I have with migration is handling notifications, so I refactored my scheduler so it’s not dependent on the model. ☺️ #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

Home sweet home. ☺️ It’s good to spend time by the lake, but it’s even better to be back home. 😅 Now I have no more excuses not to do #IndieDev stuff, I guess. Maybe besides today. 😆

As today is my last day by the lake, I planned not to work any any #IndieDev stuff, but it’s evening, I’m packed, and still have some energy… I guess some #iOSDev won’t hurt. 😅 I don’t think I’ll do much, but some progress is better than none! ☺️ #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker

Have I done almost nothing regarding Spark today? Perhaps. Have I been playing badminton and lying in a hammock most of the day? Indeed. 😁 As I still have a week of vacation and a few days by the lake I didn’t feel like working today. 😅

After Spark refactor I did for the last update, that was kinda caused by working on new schema. Today after I unstashed the new schema I needed… to fix the code. 😆 It happened I changed a bit more than I originally thought I would. 😅 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

New update ready to be released. I’ve prepared posts to publish on socials, so now just choose good timing - probably tomorrow around noon (in Europe 😜). I can’t say I did much today, but that was the plan for my vacation - work only when I want to and feel like it. ☺️ #BuildInPublic #iOSDev

I’ve just sent an update for a review! 🥳 I thought I’d never finish it, mostly because the internet connection where I am right now is bad, really bad, especially for Poland, where we have really good service almost everywhere. 😅 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev
An email notification from App Store Connect addressed to Aleksander Stojanowski, stating that the status of the submitted app has changed to "Waiting for Review."

As expected, I had no time yesterday to do anything with Spark. I spent half a day driving and unpacking, so the evening I spent enjoying the silence of being in the woods near the lake. ☺️

I got much more done today than I expected—finished new screenshots, fixed another bug (😅), and researched German keywords. On the other hand, I still haven’t sent the update for review because I don’t have the German description ready. 😕 #BuildInPublic #iOSDev #IndieDev

I thought I’d finished the code for the next update, but then I found quite a serious problem. Once a user declined notification permission during onboarding, there was no option to allow it later. 😬 I’m fixing it right now. #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

It’s time to start my vacation! 🥳 I only recently realized it’ll be the longest vacation I’ve taken in 6 years. 😱 Due to COVID and all that over the last few years, I spent most of my free time at my hometown or on some shorter trips. This time I’ll be 10 days by the lake. 😅

There is nothing better than a feeling when you finish a big refactor, remove a few hundred lines of code, and the app still works the same or maybe even better (I fixed a few bugs alongside refactoring the code). 😅 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

It happened to be a deeper rabbit hole than I originally imagined… 😳 I guess that’s what happens when you work solo and don’t have a second pair of eyes to look at the code you write. I think I must employ AI to do a code review for me. 😅 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

Struggling with a new schema, I discovered I have a few classes that solely have the responsibility of keeping just one boolean or int value and then serving as observables through the app. Basically, some app settings storages, so to speak. #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

Coming back to work after a long weekend is tough… I can’t imagine what it would be like in 3 weeks, when I’ll not only come back after 2 weeks of vacation, but also to the office instead of working from home! 😱 That’s a problem I’ll be struggling with in the future, however. 😆

Aleksander Stojanowski @stojanowski.dev · 17/08/2025
In order not to lose my mind migrating code to a new schema, I decided to commit some changes that aren’t strictly related to the new schema, and can be “ported” to the old one as well. 😅 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

Few more hours of fixing code after updating #SwiftData schema and… I’m not sure if I’m even halfway done. 😩 It seems that the calculation of streaks started working properly today, but reminders are again my nightmare. 🙈 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

Aleksander Stojanowski @stojanowski.dev · 15/08/2025
New features require a new data schema, and that means a lot of code… 😮‍💨 I spent a few hours with Xcode and the results are… very subtle, for now. 😅 Can you even see them here? 😆 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev
Two smartphone screens displaying the detail views of the "Write a Journal" habit in the Spark app. The left screen shows the updated design where the label has been changed from "Brief" to "Reason," and the calendar now reflects not only the current streak but also the full history of completed days. The right screen displays the previous design with the "Brief" label and a calendar that primarily highlighted the current streak. Both screens show monthly progress for May, June, July, and August.

Today I took a different approach to using AI for translation. First, I made ChatGPT inside Xcode to create structs for parsing .xcstrings files and extracting just keys. Then, it wrote code for reading translation from JSON and extending the existing catalog. 😅 #BuildInPublic

Aleksander Stojanowski @stojanowski.dev · 12/08/2025
I need to learn how to use AI properly… 😅 I started working on German translation for Spark, and it happens that you can’t just put a whole .xcstrings file into chat and expect a good result. 🙈 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev

I took a few minutes here and there yesterday evening and some time after work today, and I managed to set an intents flow, so I can now schedule timers from live activity! 🥳 It’s a small success, but after a tough day at work, it’s more than enough to put a smile on my face. 😅 #BuildInPublic

Today I not only started actually working on the code of my new project! 🥳 I haven’t created much yet. I decided to start with UI, and that was a good choice. I already discovered that the data model I’d had in mind isn’t sufficient. 😅 #BuildInPublic #IndieHacker #iOSDev #IndieDev
