Everyone says it has a moat. How would you know? One check: the return it makes on the money in the business, year after year. $MA's return on invested capital was 36% in 2016 and 49% in 2025, and never fell below about 30%.

Starbucks sells more than McDonald's. So why does McDonald's make twice the profit? In 2024 Starbucks took in $36.2B and kept $3.8B. $MCD took in $25.9B and kept $8.2B. Franchisees run nearly all McDonald's restaurants, so most of its revenue is rent and royalties.

Is Oracle's cash burn getting better or worse? $ORCL's free cash flow by quarter: -$10.0B and -$11.5B in the middle of FY2026, -$1.9B at the end of it, and -$5.4B in the first quarter of FY2027. Before FY2025 its quarters were mostly positive.

How much of Apple's sales come from China? Less than they used to. Greater China was $48.5B of $AAPL's revenue in 2016, 22.5%. In 2025 it was $64.4B, 15.5%. The Americas brought in 43%.

Record quarter. Is this the new normal? $MU took in $41.5B in the quarter to May 2026, at an 80% operating margin. In the quarter to March 2023 it took in $3.7B, at -62%. Ten years of quarters show every boom and bust in between.

Philip Morris sells cigarettes. Still mostly, but a smaller share every year. Products you don't light, like IQOS and ZYN, were 14% of $PM's revenue in 2018. In 2025 they were 42%: $16.9B of $40.6B.

PayPal and Mastercard both move money, and both took in about $33B in 2025. Mastercard kept $15.0B of it. $PYPL kept $5.2B. PayPal's cost of revenue was $17.7B. Mastercard doesn't have that line at all.

Intel's shares have more than tripled in a year. Has the business? $INTC's operating margin ran at 25% to 38% a quarter until 2021. It hit -68% in the third quarter of 2024 and was 12.3% in the second quarter of 2026.

Micron's sales are up 60% since 2019. Its sales to China are down. China was $3.6B of $MU's revenue in FY2019, 15%. In FY2025 it was $2.6B, 7%. The US went from $12.5B to $24.1B, 64% of the total.

Earnings per share tripled. Did the profit? $LOW's net income went from $3.1B in 2016 to $6.7B in 2025, a little over double. Earnings per share went from $3.51 to $11.90. The gap is buybacks: a third fewer shares.

PepsiCo sells twice as much as Coca-Cola. So why is Coke valued at about twice Pepsi? In 2025 PepsiCo took in $93.9B and made $13.5B of operating profit. $KO took in $47.9B and made $13.8B. Coke mostly sells concentrate; Pepsi makes and delivers its own drinks and snacks.
