We're into October, single digit temps, and the bike racks are still bursting at this ~200 kid school. Looked like at least 15% of the students arrived by bike today.

Off to Martock for a kids running race, we were thinking of doing the chairlift after for the fall fest, have never done it during fall colours, but the lack of family pricing is a little offputting

Any parents out there with audio media service recommendations for a 7 year old? Was looking at Pinna or Gabb maybe, something with some educational stuff but also music.

Helping out with my kids' beavers this year. Tonight we took the ferry over for a quick waterfront visit. On the way back they all got invited up to the wheelhouse of the ferry and got to take turns sitting in the captain's chair. Pretty cool, thanks @hfxtransit.bsky.social

Have seen a lot of complaints about not enough parking at the ferry terminals, so was curious about DIY park n rides to Woodside. You could park at Woodside Plaza, has 6 buses an hour, 5min route to Woodside. Or Millstone Sq (Baker Dr), 8 min route, twice hourly but only 5min connection.

Couple extra sets of wheels loaded up and we're off to the pump track for the afternoon

Yup, that left onto John Savage is no fun at all. Was always glad that section was before I picked up my kid. Now, I'm just glad to be done with that route in general.

not gonna lie, I think this meme format has legs so I spent some time in paint.net fitting his helmet better for future reuse.

Don't worry all, we're getting AI maps now that don't properly show the routes or detours so that should solve everything.

Getting so close to convincing some family members out of their cars due to this traffic. Take the ferry "No parking" Bike to the ferry "No secure parking" Bird to the ferry "..." Honestly, still think bird rentals should count as transit transfers

@tonymancini2025.bsky.social almost 20 kids at the Shubie pump track right now and (despite my photo auto-brightening this pic) its getting dark. We need some lighting :) #bikehfx

Boo found a smashed bottle on the path to my kids' school today. At least it was found in time to clean it up before the bike bus in the morning though.

Yup, was surprised that initially my eldest seemed off-put by the format, but once he found one he enjoyed he's completely flipped that opinion. Has opened up a lot of options and my library hold list is getting a bit out of control all of a sudden.

Graphic novels round 2: picked up a couple "Mighty Marvel Team-Up" books which seem great for ~5-7, and "It's Jeff!" which doesn't have a ton of dialogue but is pretty cute.

It was a great morning for #KidicalMassHFX and there was a huge turnout. I had so much fun that I forgot to take a picture. But this is basically what it looked like:
Stick figure bicycles in various colours some are different shapes. They all have smiley faces above them. There's a blue car and it has a frowny face in it

Oh ya they still play! They might be on and off a bit but for example back in December I went to a Slowcoaster, Jimmy Swift Band and Grand Theft Bus show that was quite the throwback.

And just to mention, in case you're thinking oh we'll just pop over to Evan's (because there is re-entry), I heard it was very busy at the surrounding food places as well. That said, there was also water filling stations which was nice, and at least one table giving out treats.

Felt well organized, there was lots to do and never really an issue with lines or getting a good spot for a show. The only exception I would say to that was food options, was a long wait at the sole food truck. The good news is you're allowed to bring your own food so I recommend packing a picnic!

Great time at FamFest Atlantic today. The music and activities were a huge hit and then just as we thought the boys were out of steam they were revitalized by the silent disco. Recommend checking out tomorrow!

I assume Slowcoaster isn't going to play this one, one of their biggest party anthems, at 6pm to a bunch of kids. Will report back though: youtu.be/OM22Gvc9nfQ?...

Happy to spot this bit about walking, biking and using transit up front in the "Where to Park?" section in the Atlantic FamFest FAQ:

I know lack of charging infrastructure is commonly pointed to as a reason people aren't adopting EVs as quickly in the Maritimes. Its not as bad as it was, but there are still some major holes.

We tend to go all in on stuff when the boys get interested in something. Picked up a variety of TMNT content from the library last night and its been a big hit. The Booyakasha Books in particular seem like a good fit for their age, fun and approachable.

Sometimes I feel like my e-cargo bike is overkill for the trip I'm making and then I think of what most people's alternative would be and realize I'm fine.

September is my favorite time of year. Summer activities are over, fall ones haven't started yet. Can just chill out and bike to playgrounds, etc each evening. (Ngl maybe we sign the kids up for too many activities)

Not sure where this is going but basically I got passed everytime the bike infrastructure was needlessly complicated. Also, Dartmouth Commons gate was chained and locked, that a September thing?

A friend driving by spotted us on a patio on Agricola. I, biking, minutes later, caught up to him at the last red before the bridge. He passed me while I looped around to the bike lane. I passed him again on the straight. He passed me while I waited for the 2 phase cross at Wyse. I passed him again

Today is my last commute through Burnside, kind of excited. See ya never! (jk I'll probably still find reasons to bike through it but hopefully bi-monthly instead daily).

I don't understand the leave you car running mindset. Three for three vehicles at my kids day care did so this morning. It's 15 degrees out, not too hot, not too cold. One minivan was running, on the street, with its sliding door wide open. Obviously not for climate control reasons.

My eldest says he's too old for a Yepp seat now that hes going into grade 2, so our days of rocking the double Yepp are over and we've moved into the cushion+pegs era

Just put an order in for another set of Bike Bus stickers for the fall. This time, I made the background a different colour to delineate them from previous ones. Pretty confident that in the kids eyes, I'm now committed to providing different coloured stickers every fall.

Promo idea: recent bike/scooter rentals count as a bus transfer ticket. More difficult to apply it the other direction though.

Pros and cons, once you have the rack your kid will eschew your perfectly good neighbourhood bike park and make you drive them out to other ones. Could be worse though.

Decided to try a bird bike home instead of a scooter tonight. Oh man they're bad on hills. 8km/h going up Waverley Rd. No wonder people drive them on the sidewalks. They either need gears or some more juice.

There's this copse of trees on the property next to my office that badly needs a picnic table in the middle of it. Or maybe I just need to stash a camp chair at work...
