When we purchase this manure, we are recognising the value of meaningful purposeful activity/participation and learning opportunities for everyone in our community,

These bags are $5 each; there is a money box on the inside of the seed library/cupboard door for both this, and koha for seedlings.

One of the aspects of this is that it is bagged up by some of our local community members being supported in a vocational activity to develop skills and earn some money to put towards a group activity.

There are still some sacks of mixed horse/donkey manure on the stall. This manure is less than 6 months old, so is ideal to pop through a compost cycle.

Thank you to my father for sending through some Kakabeak seeds from his garden. Thank you to Joe for taking a package of seed down to their local seed library.

The funniest part of all of this, is that even 20 years ago, I was terrified of making phone calls or meeting anyone I didnt know. I'm still the same now, if my phone rings, I do want to frisbee it through the lounge window,

This small, simple activity of saving and sharing seeds can be used to set up small, but important opportunities to build up community, to create non physical connection, that enables people to experience meaningful belonging,

There will be opportunities for seedsaving workshops, or even just low key meet ups over winter to package up seeds, in the same way that they have already set up a knitting group and a crafters space.

(twice to drop seeds in at Woof cafe, twice to the main library and once to the Regeant theatre). In my mind, community is more about the slow, quiet networking that gets built up over time. And it's not necessarily tangible.

All through history, this human story has been dependent on our ability as social beings, our ability to communicate, to empathize, to work together for collective benefit.

I think a lot about our deep prehistory, how our coevolution with plants and seed saving essentially allow us to survive on the light emitted from our star through the complexity of photosynthesis. How incredibly ancient this activity is, alongside weaving,

The understanding that our needs, our human rights, and our responsibilities to ourselves and those we love are the same. This is how I consider community. We all have different brains, we all have vastly different experiences and understanding of what it is to exist in the world,

Over the years, every single one of us have been through events such as earthquakes, fires, floods, pandemics, family crisis, and international disquiet. One thing that shines through all of these events that impact humanity is community, our recognition in those around us of our common ground.

perhaps in a classroom environment (if the appropriate fidget toy is used correctly). The next lot of radish seed will be harvested in approximately two weeks, and we'll have a go at threshing this by putting the plant material in a pillowcases, getting the kids to crush it.

strength building, and even having an activity that can be achieved while focus is elsewhere, a bit like how the theory of a fidget toy is to occupy one sensory modality, in order to modulate sensory input and enable focus through other sensory systems,.

I have two more lots of radish to process, one is finishing flowering on one side of the house, but still green and the White Icicle radish is now in flower, and the community garden daikon was threshed mostly by hand, because sometimes theres a benefit to fine motor skill development,

St Kilda Seed Library @stkildaseedlibrary.bsky.social · 14/01/2026
Some people put radish stems, or more accurately, siliques (which is what radish seedpods are named, as they are a specific form of seedpod) in a sack and drive over them in a car. I have just thrashed and winnowed some daikon seed originally from the Northeast Valley community garden.

St Kilda Seed Library @stkildaseedlibrary.bsky.social · 14/01/2026
One of the harder seeds to expose is radish, and its the one that can require, and tolerate, harder threshing. Threshing is the breaking of the seedpod. For radish, some of it i put in a pillowcase and step on it over and over for a few minutes before winnowing.

St Kilda Seed Library @stkildaseedlibrary.bsky.social · 14/01/2026
Doing this contributes to us building up sensory knowledge around seedsaving, which is important for all of us as we develop and share our seedsaving skills; this is mainly done with obvious seeds, and a note/images go up on this page to demonstrate where the seed is and how to expose it for sowing
100
St Kilda Seed Library @stkildaseedlibrary.bsky.social · 14/01/2026
Occasionally, whole seedpods go in packets for people just to experience what they look and feel like, and for us to have a wee play before sowing. This is often done with Lunaria/honesty, sometimes brassicas, beans, peas and stock.

St Kilda Seed Library @stkildaseedlibrary.bsky.social · 14/01/2026
But for putting seed out into our communities, seed from here, or that comes through here, often gets winnowed because sometimes people having difficulty identifying seeds amongst chaff.
100
St Kilda Seed Library @stkildaseedlibrary.bsky.social · 14/01/2026
I'm personally not worried of chaff in my own seed, it becomes part of the mulch and eventually the soil, whether I've winnowed it off seed, or chucked whole, or gently crushed seedpods in the garden.
100
St Kilda Seed Library @stkildaseedlibrary.bsky.social · 14/01/2026
and then 'winnowed', which is when the chaff, generally being lighter than the seed, is blown away on a windy day, using a fan or cool hairdryer or even gently blowing across the top of a container of seed.
100
St Kilda Seed Library @stkildaseedlibrary.bsky.social · 14/01/2026
Examples of seed that is winnowed include things like asters (lettuce, celtuce, sunflower, feverfew), chard, beans and peas, corn, many flowers, like nigella, cornflower, phacelia, astrantia, the seedpods and siliques can all be gently crushed or rubbed (in a bowl, a sack, a pillowcase or paper bag)

Wet seed is seed that forms in fruits and vegetables, in a pulp, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, zuchinni, and that information can be shared in a different post.
100
St Kilda Seed Library @stkildaseedlibrary.bsky.social · 14/01/2026
Winnowing is when the chaff, which is all the bits of seedpood, dry stems, bits of dried plant material (called chaff) gets removed from the seed, in order to 'clean' the seed. This is what is done to process dry seed, not wet seed.
