Despite me liking each song, the project overall feels both too all over the map and too samey all in the same run time. Zooming back in though, there's a lot of care and appreciation in each of these songs and I find a new favorite on this project each time I listen to it (2/2)

Fakebook - Yo La Tengo 7.8/10 I like that Yo La Tengo has such a wide array of influences and also wants to wear those influences so on their sleeve that most of these songs are covers (1/?)

A record that I'll probably like more with time, but also a record that is close to that enjoyment cap as it is now. Inoffensive and enjoyable, but not an album I'd necessarily whose smaller parts and tracks I'd write home about (3/3)

They require time and an appreciation of texture over hooks, which can honestly be a little fatiguing to get through on certain listens. Aside from that though, the textures are still nice on the ears even if their iconicity isn't up to par with the backlog (2/3)

This Mirror Weighs a Ton - Interpol 7.5/10 Interpol maintain their famous quasi-nonchalance in the delivery on these tracks overtop textures that remind me of a filed down version of what they have done in the past. I'll also mention that a lot of these songs aren't super grabby (1/?)

I'd really like to play a couple of these songs as maps on Friday Night Funkin (3/3)

There was a track that felt pretty out of place quality-wise that I felt took me out of the headspace the rest of the EP had me in, but it obviously wasn't so bad that I didn't still enjoy the project and still think it's worth recommending (2/3)

The Bugs (EP) - Viiq 7.9/10 I greatly enjoy the direction a couple of these tracks went in particular! It's a solid pop EP that fits in the modern pop zeitgeist with some hyperpop elements in the production choices (1/?)

I really can't think of much to say about it even in this moment, which isn't to say it's offensive to hear, but I just feel very little about it at large (2/2)

F.I.G - Naomi Scott 5.3/10 This feels like an attempt to marry 1980s pop feels with modern sensibilities, but it just sort of feels like a forgettable wash to me aside for moments on certain tracks (1/2)

Despite my ordering criticism, I do think there's a lot of good stuff on this record and given that focus and condensing jam sessions into songs was the main challenge for this album, I'm impressed with how tight it fit together (3/3)

but fact of the matter is I really don't love the second side and I really love the first side, and the track order does a number on the enjoyment this album brings. In another world, there's a flow of this project that feels right, or at least more right than this (2/?)

Pelican West - Haircut 100 7.8/10 This is some fine and danceable new wave music from across the pond. If they had whittled this track list down to the 8 best tracks, they'd have a pretty darn unstoppable album on their hands, … (1/?)

I also don't often take production into account too much in my enjoyment of a record, but the auto tune and compression on this album actually hurt me to listen to (4/4)

Stitch O’Donovan @stitchodonovan.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
What does affect me on the negative side is some of the content, which either engages with a musical idea too long or a concept that has been done quite a bit (3/4)

Secondly, this album manages to make a less cohesive project still really dynamic and interesting, which normally takes me out of an album, but for some reason doesn't for this project (2/?)

I also appreciate the cohesion of the final two tracks, the first of which begs for the album to end on that song, and the latter being immediate punishment and horror for the choice to keep going (4/4)

Stitch O’Donovan @stitchodonovan.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
That all being said, there are a few songs on this record that are total bliss to hear from a songwriting perspective, lyrical perspective, and vibes (3/4)

Even songs that don't leave me wowed are at the very least, like, fun? There isn't a bad song on this record and that's really cool even if some of it just happens (2/?)

Tragic Kingdom - No Doubt 8.6/10 No Doubt like to play around with style in variable margins, and this record is their best attempt at doing so boldly, but not too incoherently (1/?)

Sometimes the transparency and left-in material feels unnecessary, but it also adds to the project as well in a strange way (3/3)

such as vocal fry before a song, sounds of lips moving, and even a flubbed take left in before the real song. It's a truly human record that feels vibrant despite its minimalistic consort of acoustic instruments (2/3)

Rejoicing in the Hands - Devendra Banhart 8.8/10 You can feel the room and all its creaks and cracks on this record with how tightly compressed it is and how much of the normally cut material is left in, … (1/?)

It's relatable and endearing, and the tunes stick with you a lot stronger than the side of the record that follows. Not to say any of it is "bad," but it definitely shines more earlier on (3/3)

A triumph on all fronts. Final note: more albums should have hidden tracks with "previews" of the "next record" like this one does (4/4)

Wanderlust, understanding others beyond preconceived ideas of them, and reflecting on someone long forgotten from the past and how their life has drifted so far from one's own, and many such philosophical and interpersonal subjects are what make this album feel so human and tender (3/4)

sounding rough around the edges in genre and style while maintaining airtight orchestral decisions that bring a tear to the eye. Lyrically, the record finds a soft spot in between the cracks of hardened hearts of humanity (2/?)

Marching to the beat of one's own drum can definitely account for a couple moments/a song or two on here that just weren't for me, but at it's highest, this record is a joyous, funky engine of happiness and dance (3/3)

Swamp Dogg's personal approach to music feels so free and unapologetically his own by reason of nothing other than some of these killer performances (2/3)

Finally Caught Up With Myself - Swamp Dogg 8.1/10 It isn't like the music on this record is all that different from some of the kind of records you'd hear from the 70's, but… (1/?)

In doing this, these calls to action feel softened over and less of an extreme ask and more of a matter-of-fact statement about how things ebb and flow. Extremely danceable and engaging music and eloquent and to the point lyricism. By all these pieces, a mostly bulletproof record (2/2)

Stitch O’Donovan @stitchodonovan.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Wide Awake! - Parquet Courts 9.5/10 I think it's really smart to use 1970s influenced sensibilities musically when talking about these seemingly large scale social calls to action and change, as the 1970s was a time of great change as well that our society didn't collapse under (1/?)

All of that is to say it's fuzzy and sort of whimsically philosophical and about nothing for half the time. Which happens to be a vibe I like! Minus points though for being outdated in a couple uncomfortable ways, which aren't intentional or done with malice but still haven't aged particularly well

Hit to Death in the Future Head - The Flaming Lips 8.3/10 This is the second of a four album stretch of what I consider the second of four larger eras (maybe 5 now that Steven Drozd is indefinitely out of the group) in the band's stylistic life (1/?)

Stitch O’Donovan @stitchodonovan.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
Not that I fully disliked it (although it's my least favorite on the project), it definitely put a big crack in the album's cohesion and unity. It's an interesting and charming listen at large (4/4)

Stitch O’Donovan @stitchodonovan.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
I do feel like the balance of those influences on the record can feel a little disproportionate, with a big heel turn into a full on diss track among the music about love and relationships (3/4)

I love how big La Doña's personality is and how it is expressed in not just her lyrics, but her vocal stylings as well. She commands attention and it's hypnotizing (2/?)

Corrientes - La Doña 8.2/10 A blending of Latin/Caribbean beats and stylings, pop, hip-hop, and almost a hint of lounge/vocal jazz in there (1/?)

A lot of the songs on here can be boiled down to ""wow, I can't believe I let this loser guy ruin my life so badly." (4/4)

Stitch O’Donovan @stitchodonovan.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
The specifics of this record, while including a lot of different influences and even a Robert Smith (of The Cure fame) feature, all boil down to a growth and a recognition of past mistakes (3/4)
