Having a strained relationship with my family is foreign for me because we used to be very close. I see them sparingly but we do still drop things off for each other. Today my parents dropped off mangos and in exchange, I gave them a fresh baked loaf of bread.

Remember that coworker that almost died recently from pneumonia and sepsis? Well, he's back to being unmasked at work.

Today, I noticed a coworker who was back to masking (surgical). He is in his late 50s and was one of the last to stop. He was noticeably skinnier and was already skinny to begin with. He told me that he had pneumonia and was hospitalized. He almost died because it turned into sepsis.

Today would have been Carl Sagan's 90th birthday. He wrote this in 1995. Carl was absolutely right. #CarlSaganDay
I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time - when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness. The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.

Trying to de-stress so I'm sharing my latest knitting 🧶 project. It's a triangle scarf. Followed the campside shawl pattern on Ravelry. Now onto my next project.

Visited my family yesterday. The talk is similar to when I see my in-laws but it hits diff. when it comes from my family. Maybe bc I have been brutally honest w/them about the research on covid. I've had to be gentler w/my in-laws. The results are the same. I'm still the only one who cares abt it.

Today my daughter found a lizard that looked like it was sick or dying. She wanted to try to save him. He's currently lying in a glass jar, in the sun with some warm water. Seems to be opening his eyes and breathing more. We shall see...

Long COVID is why I'm still strategically masking. I'm not worried about getting horrible acute illness given I've been vaccinated many times and exposed several, but until the post-acute rates drop to similar to other viruses...

More knitting because the holidays are stressful and so is work. Glad to have something that I can lose myself in. Pattern is called Brette from rastus0226.

Silly thought of the day: the next time I buy socks, they will all be the same. Over time, I always end up with a bunch that don't match and it really irritates me.

Today, I'm bringing 9 to her best friend's birthday party. It's at a park and I'm bracing myself to be the only adult who is masked. Hoping it's not too awkward. She's so, so excited.

How many people start knitting/crocheting projects, get 3/4 of the way done before they decide they want to start another project and then have a hard time going back to finish that last 1/4? Just me? My daughter just saw me start something small & asked if she'll ever be able to wear her hoodie 😳

I notice I get extra crafty when I'm mentally stressed. Lots of close family are doing every high risk activity (traveling in big groups, cruises, concerts, etc). So I currently have 4 knitting projects and have sewn pants and a dress this weekend. Thankful for the walk I took earlier w/ the kids.
Photo of a small pond with green algae. Lots of tadpoles and 6 rocks that make a path halfway across the length of the pond.

Watched the partial eclipse and now looking at 9 while she walks around the house with a wig cap and a big googly eye on her forehead. She said, "Today's another good day to be a weirdo." And she'd totally go to school like this if it wasn't a distraction to classmates. 😄

It’s time to spell it out loud and clear. “Endemic” is a racist, classist, ableist and ageist word that means some people are worth less than others. It is part of “the price one pays for progress” that the expendable must be thrown under the wheel. www.wsws.org/en/articles/...
The other piece is that when we actually look at the use of the word endemic—both currently and historically—there is an implicit and sometimes explicit part of the definition of that term that means a disease is endemic when the people who are bearing the burden of infection and disease are people who we don’t really care about.Aly and Heim: Compromise was looked upon as a mark of intellectual laziness, while patently criminal acts were spuriously dignified as historical necessity, 'the price one pays for progress'. The size and qualitative composition of the population were to be continuously monitored and regulated through government programmes of birth control (and birth promotion), resettlement and extermination.

Have been noticing more couples that are retirement age are having a tough time with their marriages. Lots of complaints of personality changes that are making it difficult to even attempt to try to work things out. Maybe it has always been this way but it's so hard to watch.

When you try a new method for adding new yarn, on your most ambitious (as a novice knitter) project and then you spend the next hour undoing stitches because it didn't work properly. Will try again with an easier project. 😕

If *everyone* gets Covid repeatedly, we will not have an uninfected control group. And without that point of comparison, most people will not realize how much healthier they could have been. This mass infection strategy is being pursued deliberately.

The ocean was always my place of peace. But since the pandemic started, I have grown to love the desert. I love the quiet, being able to be in nature and feel like there are no other souls nearby for miles. Seeing that life can thrive, even in the toughest of environments, brings me comfort.

I'm alarmed by the level of memory loss in some people I work with. I'm having conversations & to them it's like a brand new topic. In reality, we've had 2-3 recent meetings w/people to discuss only this issue. Summarizing doesn't even trigger a faint memory. It's like none of it ever happened.

Keep thinking about the birthday party I went to yesterday. Still boggles my mind that all the kids were coughing and or sniffly in Sept. And that every parent there thought it was ok to bring their sniffly, coughing kid to the party.

Felt guilty baking cinnamon rolls so 9 and I had an hour long dance party while 12 worked on an art project. Soup for dinner to make up for the sweets. If you're not feeling that great, highly recommend listening to music. My kids both think the 80s had the best music.

I went to a family party today. I debated going for weeks and decided to go early and not stay long. I spent most of it outside even though majority of the guests stayed in. A cousin came outside with his dogs to hang out w/me and my kids. He never mentioned our masks, he just talked with me.
